Mission San Jose High School’s Lyon Zhang has made his college swimming decision, as he’s just given his verbal commitment to join the Northwestern men next fall. He’ll be making the move to Northwestern from his home training base with the Pleasanton Seahawks.

On his commitment:

“Throughout the visiting process, Northwestern stood out as the best fit for me. With dedicated coaches, an incredibly cohesive team, and an extensive athletic support staff, Northwestern will provide the environment I need to grow to my full potential.”

Zhang is a 2-time Scholastic All American. Last season, he finaled in both of his individual races at the CIF North Coast Section Championships. There, he placed 4th in the 200 IM, and followed suit with a 4th place finish in the 100 breast.

During the summer, he qualified to swim at the 2016 Speedo Junior National Championships, where he made it to the championship final to place 7th in the 200 meter breast. He also earned second swims in the 400 meter IM (16th) and 100 meter breast (23rd) at that meet.

Zhang’s Top Times:

Event Best time
100 breast 56.58
200 breast 2:00.57
200 IM 1:50.76
400 IM 4:01.29

Zhang is already fast enough to have scored at the 2016 Big Ten Championships in the 200 breast, so he could have an immediate scoring impact for the Wildcats. When he arrives on campus, he’ll be training with breaststrokers William Hofstadter and Athanasius Kountroubis, who both scored at Big Tens last season.
