First-year pro swimmer Josh Matheny competed at the Bergen Swim Festival last weekend, placing 4th in the 50 (27.81) and 100 Breast (1:00.48) and 3rd in the 200 Breast (2:13.46). The NCAA All-American for Indiana said it has been a bit more challenging than he expected transitioning to the pro life, not always having the team environment around him during training when the college team is off at conference or NCAA Championships.
However, Matheny said he is adjusting and is excited to just have one big meet, Pan Pacific Championships, to focus on for the summer.

Ohio Swimming was fortunate to have Josh as one of our visiting clinicians at our Beyond the Blocks event this past weekend. He was fabulous with the athletes and a pleasure to visit with. A great role model for younger swimmers. These elite athletes experience ups and downs like any other human. Part of their success stories often lie with how they overcome those challenges that many of us don’t see. Wish him all the best!
He seems to be upbeat about his choices, and yet quite realistic about the immediate results.
I suspect he’ll be there in years 2 and 3!
How dare he say he is glad to have just one meet to focus on this summer (no trials). The media (SS) says what about if? Coaches and many national teamers support during it every 4 years. Yes, I have always supported it.
I have no idea what you’re saying.
Me neither lol
Oh well.
I hope this is just sarcasm.
If not, I can’t believe how can this dearest gentle reader doesn’t know that there is no trials this summer for USA swimmers. For Pan Pacs, they chose it from 2025 competition.
doesn’t help that us breastroke just got way more difficult
I feel like the 200 breast is still a bit more open. 50/100 are way more stacked
Yes, but ..no one shall touch Van M . He would at least bring 5 medals home this summer including relays and fly.
Yeah maybe if he didn’t take 271 strokes per 50 meters and learned how to do a pullout swimming would be easier😭💔
He can only hope that his pro career is as good as… um… yours?
Hahaha! High level athlete competes on highest level with high level coaches.
Armchair QB: let me give you some advice here
But he’s been plateauing for a couple years now. Maybe a change in scenery could help!
