Izzy Ivey Shares Perspective on Coming Home to Florida, Teri McKeever

n the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman HodgesGarrett McCaffrey, and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

SwimSwam sat down with 26x NCAA All-American Izzy Ivey, who recently announced her transfer to the University of Florida for her final (5th) year of eligibility. She takes us through the last 9 months of her swimming career, from taking an extended hiatus from the pool after NCAAs (and again after Teri McKeever was suspended from the Cal team for allegations of abuse) to training with Dave Durden and ultimately deciding to move to Gainesville.
On the matter of Teri McKeever, Ivey says that she had a good relationship with McKeever and was shocked to find out about the allegations against her. However, Ivey was also surprised to find out that her former teammates had had such traumatic experiences with McKeever.

Have none of you people ever done a Zoom meeting when you have to see your face on the screen? No need to be cranky friends. Swimmers are incredible folks and I love their hearts.

I think it’s interesting to watch her body language when she talks about Teri. She can hardly look at the screen. She is either not being honest or she is so narcissistic that she can’t relate to how her teammates felt. She absolutely saw some of what Teri did. She wasn’t a team captain at Cal because he teammates didn’t vote her in. I hope she can mature and be part of the Florida team. If history continues to repeat itself it’s going to be difficult.

She didn’t look into the camera for most of the interview because the camera was not in good position. She was obviously uncomfortable and conflicted speaking about the McKeever situation as anyone would be. I am glad she is able to be with her family and continue to swim in a great program.

I think the fact that she was one of the few athletes to not know about the article before it dropped says enough.

Methinks that if you’re a superstar like Ivey, you’d be less likely to be bullied and Teri might’ve even hid it from her.

Mature? Like anonymously trashing people (former teammates?) online?

She seems like a smart, fun person who can keep things in perspective and knows herself well. She will do great in the future!

Fun, miscellaneous fact: In 2017-18, Florida Miss Swimming was Izzy Ivey and Mr. Swimming was Bobby Finke.
