Ilya Kharun Lowers Canadian 100 Fly, 50 Free Records As He Shows Sprint Prowess In Westmont

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Westmont

Ilya Kharun started off strong on day 1 of the Westmont stop of the World Aquatics World Cup, setting a pair of best times in the 100 fly and 50 free and setting Canadian Records in both events.

He reprised his 2nd-place finish from Carmel in the 100 fly, finishing behind World-record Noe Ponti for the second week in a row. He did however shave two-hundredths of a second from his Canadian Record, inching closer to the 48-second barrier. His time of 49.00 last night was a new best and keeps him ranked 10th all-time in the event, but he is now just a hundredth of a second behind Nyls Korstanje in 9th.

  3. Chad Le Clos (RSA) – 48.08, 2016

  9. Nyls Korstanje (NED) – 48.99, 2024
  10. Ilya Kharun (CAN) – 49.00, 2025

He was out slightly slower on each of the first three lengths, but was a full two-tenths faster over the final 25 meters than last week. A strong final 25 meters is something we’ve seen several times now from Kharun on the World Cup tour, winning the 200 fly and 50 fly last week thanks to some strong finishing speed.

Top 8 Finishers:

  2. Ilya Kharun (CAN) – 49.00
  3. Josh Liendo (CAN) – 49.56
  4. Finlay Brooks (CLB) – 50.06
  5. Simone Stefani (ITA) – 50.08
  6. Ksawery Masiuk (POL) – 50.17
  7. Trenton Julian (CLB) – 50.66
  8. Kamil Sieradzki (POL) – 52.34

He was not done there on Day 1. Less than half an hour later Kharun was back in the water again in the 50 freestyle final, aiming to improve on his 3rd-place finish last week. He bettered both his position and the time, dropping from 20.89 to 20.72, taking the win over countryman Liendo.

Liendo was close behind in the pair’s second battle of the evening (Liendo was 3rd in the 100 fly in 49.56), clocking a time of 20.87 that stands up as his 2nd-fastest ever. That is just over a tenth of a second off his personal best and former Canadian Record of 20.76, set when winning bronze at the 2021 Short Course World Championships.

Kharun’s swim tonight shaved 0.04 seconds from that mark, giving the ASU swimmer his sixth individual National Record and tenth in total. This is his first record in a stroke other than fly, as the form he showed last year in yards looks to have translated well into meters.

Kharun’s previous best time stood at 20.80, set on the leadoff leg of the silver medal-winning mixed 4×50 free relay at short course worlds this past December.  He was out in an identical 10.11 on the first 25 of both swims, but came home eight-hundredths faster last night.

He now stands as the joint-22nd fastest man in history, tied with Chris Guiliano and Szebastian Szabo.

A real loss for the US National Team when his ineligibility was uncovered. Canada is lucky to have a talent like him!

Ilya is quite a mix of talents.

Sandpiper distance as a youth, including impressive 1650s; and now he wins a SCM World Championship 200 Fly one year and 10 months later sets Canadian records for the supreme short course spring 0events, 50 free and 100 fly. Also interesting to have Canadian records in those events in era of Liendo who has won each of these events on the NCAA level.
