Hunter Armstrong was drug tested by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency right after racing at the Enhanced Games today in Las Vegas, Nevada. Armstrong is competing as a clean athlete in the Enhanced Games.

In the video, Armstrong says he has been drug tested 11 times since joining the Enhanced Games. His tests today were both a blood and urine test. He had to wait an hour after racing to complete his blood test. According to USADA records, Armstrong has been tested at least five times this year, although that database is only updated through May 15th. Tests performed outside USADA are not included in this database.

Armstrong made the move to join the Enhanced Games back in March of this year. He announced his plans to compete clean right from the start.

Armstrong competed in two races today, winning the 50 backstroke in a 24.21. That was off his lifetime best of a 23.71. He earned $250,000 with his win. He was back in the water for the men’s 100 free, touching 2nd but was off his lifetime best 47.59. He earned another $125,000 with his 2nd place finish.

Smart move! The only ones looking like fools are those who did not participate

They should be drug testing at Mens NCAA championships (rumors of cocaine use this year – to enhance performance)

honestly this is the only storyline I’m happy about with the enhanced games. I’m glad Hunter is making money and beating juiced athletes while staying clean. it also makes the rest of juiced athletes look like fools for losing to someone that’s not on the sauce. i really hope we see him competing in LA.

I really love this for Hunter. He beat the juiced athletes because he actually put the time and energy into working hard, unlike those who took short cuts and stupidly thought that swimming fast was all about who has the most muscle mass. Of course the USADA was going to test him, that was a guarantee as soon as he signed on, but he already knew that. He didn’t risk his health by using PEDs, he got to race in a super suit, and he got a FAT check. He in no way tarnished his reputation, and he further proved that doped athletes aren’t the fastest just because they’re taking PEDs. Maybe after this, USA Swimming (and all of the… Read more »

Its fine to say pay athletes, but what is the source of funds? Government grants? Increased fees on USA swimming age group members? Neither seems likely or viable – someone needs to solve the riddle of how to make races draw an audience on TV so networks will pay for rights. I applaud the efforts of college coaches to innovate – but until something catches on – swimmers will remain underpaid.

I don’t fault Hunter for the cash grab. He’s been able to do what he set out to do. Get money while competing cleanly. He’s just funded his next two years of training.

What I don’t get is how so much money is available to win. Is it sustainable? Will there be even more clean athletes chasing the cash next time?

This is a complicated one. I am against the concept of the enhanced games and think it is a stain on the sport. Morally it’s wrong and has the potential to hurt athletes. That being said it’s hard to blame him for trying to financially support himself when if you aren’t a Phelps it’s hard to make money or a career from swimming and he has decided to not use drugs thankfully. The frequent negative testing is helpful. I feel like he shouldn’t be punished for his association with the league while continuing to test negative. However I wish the Enhanced Games goes away. I will not watch it and let them profit further.
