Less than an hour after shattering the world record in the 200 backstroke, Hungarian Hubert Kos was back in the water to take down another record, this time in the 100 IM.

While he didn’t come up with the win, as American Shaine Casas (50.28) led from start to finish, Kos was less than three-tenths back. He hit the wall with a time of 50.56 to smash his own national record and claim second place, an upgrade from the bronze medals he earned at the previous two World Cup stops.

In the course of just over two weeks, Kos has taken the national mark in the event down by nearly two seconds from the 52.82 he swam three years ago at the Hungarian Championships.

Compared to last week, Kos did most of his damage on the breaststroke, going 15.28 versus 15.50 for more than two-tenths quicker. He also showed significant improvement on the backstroke leg with a two-tenths drop, while opening 0.15 faster and closing 0.16 quicker.

In his post-race interview, Kos praised his training environment, saying, “We’re the best team in the world, like the best training group in the world. It just proves how good of a coach Bob is and how he consistently delivers performances. It’s not just one person, not just two people. It’s literally like 10, 15.”

“There wasn’t really much thought. I mean, I knew my breaststroke wasn’t going to be great and I’d try to get out ahead in the first 50. Fair play to him. That’s a great time. And I’ve just improved so much over the past three weeks in that event. So really, really happy with that,” he added, reflecting on his race strategy.

Kos owns a total of seven national records: all six backstroke standards in the SCM and LCM pools, and this 100 IM.

Kept it closer than I expected, and as the second half of an impressive double.
