Thomas Ceccon took 2nd in the 200 backstroke tonight behind newly-minted record holder Hubert Kos, but set a record of his own as he took down Lorenzo Mora‘s mark of 1:48.43 by nearly a second, clocking 1:47.49. Mora was in the field as well in Toronto, taking 3rd behind Kos and Ceccon in 1:50.32.
Ceccon is the long course World Record holder in the 100 back, and also owns the Italian Record in the long course 200 back, as well as in the 50 and 100 fly. In short course, however, this is his first Italian Record.
His previous best came from the Westmont stop of the World Cup last week, where he was just 0.33 of Mora’s mark as he swam to a time of 1:48.76. He placed 2nd behind Kos then as well, and was out much faster this week to drop over a second.
Split Comparison
| Thomas Ceccon, 2025 – World Cup, Westmont Stop | Lorenzo Mora, 2023 – European Short Course World Championships | Thomas Ceccon, 2025 – World Cup, Toronto Stop | |
| 50 | 25.94 | 26.19 | 25.25 |
| 100 | 54.18 (28.24) | 54.12 (27.93) | 52.53 (27.28) |
| 150 | 1:21.92 (27.74) | 1:21.31 (27.19) | 1:19.76 (27.23) |
| 200 | 1:48.76 (26.84) | 1:48.43 (27.12) | 1:47.49 (27.73) |
He hit the halfway point 1.65 seconds up this week, and was more than two seconds ahead with 50 meters to go. Although he couldn’t close with quite the same aplomb as he did last week, where he actually outsplit Kos over the final 50 meters, he had more than enough in reserve to set a new best and stay ahead of Mora’s pace despite splitting slower on both of the final two 50s.
Ceccon now ranks as the 9th-fastest swim in history, improving 13 places over the last week.

Ceccon still has entries in the 50 fly, 100 back, 50 back, and 100 free remaining this week. He will lock horns with Kos again in the 50 back tomorrow, where he was just 0.03 behind the Hungarian last week in Westmont, and that event may be his best shot of a head-to-head win.

show me a still shot of the perfect backstroke breakout.
thank you.
