GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 2/26/2021

In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Zane Johnson, 14, South Bay Aquatics (SBA-SI): Swimming in South Bay Aquatics’ February meet for the 12-14 age groups, Johnson hit three personal bests. Most notable was probably his 1:51.98 in the 200-yard fly. That was a drop of 2.4 seconds for Johnson, who also went 2:02.94 in the 200 back and 4:48.80 in the 500 free.

Lucy Bell, 16, Fort Collins Area Swim Team (FAST-CO): Bell is already pretty well-known as a top butterflyer and IMer in the current class of high school juniors. But she had a big breakthrough in the 100 breast this week, dropping 4.7 seconds to go 1:01.45 at the CO FAST Aquarius Invite in Colorado. In the same meet, Bell hit lifetime-bests in the 100 back, 200 back, 200 breast and 50 free.

Hayden Penny, 14, Y-Spartaquatics Swim Team (YSST-SC): Penny swam to six lifetime-bests across a four-day state championship meet in South Carolina. Highlighting the great meet was Penny’s first swim ever under 1:50 in the 200 free – a drop of almost two seconds to 1:48.95. Penny also about a second and a half with a 2:04.50 in the 200-yard fly, and four seconds to 4:20.41 in the 400 IM.

J.T. Ewing, 16, The Fish (FISH-PV): Ewing broke through multiple huge barriers at the PV DMV Showcase. He cut almost one full second, from 48.72 to 46.79 in the 100 freestyle, skipping the 47s altogether. And Ewing also cut his 200 free from 1:42.59 to 1:39.34 with a drop of more than three seconds.
