BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s swimming and diving program honored a dozen seniors and fifth-years before the Retrievers faced George Mason in their final home meet of the 2022-23 season.

Junior Daniel Nicusan, senior Niklas Weigelt and sophomore Oliver Gassmann combined to win seven events as the Retrievers defeated the Patriots, 173-127.

“This is exactly the meet we needed to have,” said Head Coach Matt Donovan. “We challenged the team in practice this week with a variety of goals and we hit on almost every single one of them today.

Nicusan earned three golds for the first time in his career, posting victories in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 200 individual medley.

Weigelt captured the 200 and 100 freestyle races, while Gassmann took the 200 and 100 butterfly competitions.

The Retrievers also featured a pair of first-place finishers in the diving competition. Senior Will Henrickson posted a mark of 267.45 to win the 1-meter event, while freshman Anders Logas edged Henrickson, 284.48-262.35 to take the 3-meter board.

UMBC won both relays, as the quartet of junior Ryan Harding, Nicusan, Gassmann and Weigelt won the opening 200-yard medley relay. Gassmann led off and Weigelt anchored the closing win in the 400 freestyle relay, with graduate student Tiago Asakawa and junior Bode Neale
handling the middle two legs.

UMBC completed a three-meet in eight-day stretch. Although the divers will compete at Bucknell on January 28, the swimmers will not face competition again until Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the America East Championships.

“We are going to use this as the perfect jumping off point to get to conference and defend our title,” said Donovan.
