Gamecocks Earn Verbal Commitment from Sprinter Cole Bruns

Cole Bruns from New Braunfels, Texas has announced his verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina for 2019-20.

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina! The culture and quality of the team as well as the impressive academics are perfect fits for me as a student athlete. I can’t wait to join the Gamecock family! #SpursUp”

Bruns is a fast-rising sprinter who will be a senior at New Braunfels High School next fall. He also swims year-round for Alamo Area Aquatic Association. Bruns moved to Texas from Georgia before the start of his junior year of high school; prior to that he had swum for Eastside High School and Walton Waves in Covington, Georgia.

Bruns stepped up his game as a junior, breaking school records in the 50 free and 100 free and qualifying for the Texas UIL 5A State Meet. He also combined with Unicorn teammates Isaac Barrera, Will Malatek and Zach Rodeffer to shave 2 seconds off the school record in the 200 free relay and lower the 400 free relay by 5 seconds; both relays qualified for the state meet, as well.

Bruns is 6’4″ and still improving. He only began swimming year-round as a sophomore in high school and hasn’t even completed a long course season yet. He told SwimSwam, “I used to swim summer league as a little kid but I was always a basketball, football, and baseball player predominately. I couldn’t stay healthy so I decided to try out competitive swimming sophomore year. This is my first long course season. My goals for the season are 23.99 in the 50 free, 52.49 in the 100 free, and 59.99 in the 100 back.”

His time progressions during his high school career thus far are:

  9th grade 10th grade 11th grade
50 free 23.93 22.05 21.20
100 free 54.18 48.53 46.23
100 back 1:03.18 56.64 55.13
