She may have missed the podium in tonight’s 200m freestyle but Freya Colbert made British history at these 2025 World Championships.
The 21-year-old reigning 400m IM world champion clocked a big-time lifetime best of 1:55.06 to place 4th in the women’s 200m freestyle final.
That erased her former PB of 1:55.76 notched this past April at the Aquatics GB Championships/World Championships Trials.
Colbert hung with the best in the world during this medal-contending race, sitting in the 3rd position at the 100m and 150m markers before American Claire Weinstein overtook her for the bronze.
Weinstein placed 3rd in 1:54.67 behind China’s Li Bingjie and Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan who registered respective times of 1:54.52 and 1:53.48 for silver and gold.
As for Colbert, her 1:55.06 PB established a new British national record, surpassing the supersuited former record of 1:55.54 Joanne Jackson put on the books at the 2009 World Championships.
Tonight, Colbert split 27.21/28.85/29.57/29.43 to get job done and now rank as the top British woman in history.
This represents Colbert’s first individual British national record and gives us a good preview of what she may be able to turn in for the women’s 400m IM later in the competition.

A good meet for GB, some misses but the world has moved on ?
Don’t think they are having a good meet. They need Scott to come through with a medal tomorrow. And also Evans to show up on the 200 breast as don’t think the lads are going to do anything in the 200 and don’t think Colbert will medal in 400 IM as she admitted she hasn’t been training as much on that at the moment
Medals aside, GB having an ok meet?
Evans and Richards (200Fr) have cost them so far.
There have been a couple of misses but also a load of best times. I don’t think it’s a bad meet, but others are having better meets.
Very impressive swim! If it wasn’t for Yu Zidi’s potential for a massive improvement, I’d be feeling pretty good about her getting a medal in the 400IM.
