BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UNT swimming and diving team wrapped up a week of competition in Florida on Friday with a triple dual meet against FAU and Wagner at FAU.

The Mean Green had several strong showings, including some who swam new events, but they were led on Friday by a double win for sophomore Jette Schindler in the 100 and 200 butterfly and a win for freshman Vivian Anderson in the 100 backstroke.

UNT had several runner-up showings, as well, as Anderson took second in the 100 freestyle, senior Kayleigh Lovell took second in the 200 freestyle and freshman Maria Jose Sanchez Castro took second in the 200 breaststroke. Two relays also placed second, as the 200 medley relay of Anderson, Mikaela Goelst, Schindler and Scarlett McCloud and the 400 freestyle relay of Lovell, McCloud, Maddie McAlister and Anderson both earned runner-up finishes. McCloud also finished third in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and Lovell took third in the 200 backstroke.

In the diving events, junior Sydney Guidara finished fourth in the 1-meter springboard and seventh in the 3-meter springboard.

“Overall, we had a really strong showing today with our meet with FAU and Wagner,” head coach Brittany Roth said. “We’re in the peak of training and our student-athletes have put in a lot of work and effort during our time here training long course and getting our divers on tower. The strength of our team is our team members’ ability to take challenges head on, and together as a group with excitement and enthusiasm. Our team showed up, ready to compete, even swimming better than we had just one week prior with FIU. That says a lot about what our athletes can look forward to as we set our sights on our prep for the American Championships.

Jette Schindler was on fire today, and Viv Anderson getting the win the the 100 Back was awesome. Swimming outdoors is hard, especially when we train regularly in indoor environments, and for Viv to get her hand in the wall first with the sun in her eyes the whole time was a true showcase of her grit and determination. We had a lot of athletes competing today in ways we don’t normally have them compete. Maria Mitova had a strong showing in her first-ever 1,000, then she followed it up with a strong 500 Free. Majo Sanchez Castro had a great swim in the 200 Freestyle, her first time racing that event in Short Course Yards. Hollie Smith and Joy Graziano stepped up for the team to compete in the 500 and 200 back, areas where the team had opportunities to score points. I’m excited to get this next semester started, and to get the team back in the swing of things over this next month.”
