Duke Swimmers Set for Cavalier Invitational Today and Saturday

The Duke men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will send representatives to the Cavalier InvitationalFriday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15 at Virginia’s Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va. The two-day meet will be the final competition for the Blue Devil swimmers prior to the 2014 ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Cavalier Invite Format
The two-day meet in Charlottesville will feature preliminaries and finals sessions each day, with the action getting underway at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday … The Blue Devils will be joined at the meet by swimmers from Drexel, James Madison, Pennsylvania and William & Mary as well as host Virginia … Live results will be available on VirginiaSports.com<http://www.virginiasports.com/livestats/c-swim/2013-14/>.

Last Time Out
Seniors Hunter Knight and Christine Wixted swept the men’s and women’s breaststroke events and classmate Nick McCrory set a pair of pool records on the boards, but the Blue Devils ultimately fell to a pair of nationally-ranked North Carolina squads in the regular season home finale Feb. 1 at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion … The Duke women suffered a 157-134 setback to the ninth-ranked Tar Heel women and the Blue Devil men dropped a 172-120 loss to the 16th-ranked North Carolina men … Duke’s senior class of Jonathan Derlath, Tyler Fleming, Kelly Hagerty, Knight, Eneka Lamb, Tricia Leeson, McCrory, Lauren Weaver, Wixted and manager Katie Howard were honored prior to competing in Taishoff for the final time in their careers.

ACC Championships Approaching
The 2014 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, which also includes the men’s diving events, is slated for Feb. 19-22 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. … The ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship will be held at the same location Feb. 26-March 1 … Last year’s conference championships saw senior Nick McCrory become the first male diver in the history of the ACC to sweep the three diving events at one meet … He was named the ACC Men’s Championship Most Valuable Diver and solidified his status as the most decorated diver in the history of the conference with seven ACC diving crowns for his career … The Blue Devils also return All-ACC performers Hunter Knight (100 and 200-yard breaststroke), Lauren Weaver (50 freestyle) and Christine Wixted (100 and 200 breaststroke) to the conference championship team.

Duke in the National Landscape
Senior Christine Wixted currently ranks third in the ACC and is tied for 13th in the country with her 100 breaststroke time of 1:00.27 at the Nike Cup … She also is fourth in the conference and 18th nationally at the 200-yard distance (2:10.10)… Fellow senior Hunter Knight is among the top 40 male swimmers nationally in the 100 breaststroke (54.19) … The women’s 200 freestyle relay of senior Lauren Weaver, senior Christine Wixted, freshman Maddie Rusch and sophomore Chelsea Ye ranks fifth in the ACC with a mark of 1:32.18 … Rusch is also second in the conference and 33rd nationally in the 50 freestyle at 22.61 … In diving, senior Nick McCrory paces the conference on all three disciplines.
