Distance Freestyler Leah Fonnotto Commits to Florida Tech

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Leah Fonnotto from Land O’ Lakes, Florida has announced her commitment to swim and study at Division II Florida Institute of Technology beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

“I am so excited to finally announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Florida Tech. I would like to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for their endless support and encouragement. I can’t wait to be part of such an amazing team! Let’s go, Panthers!

Fonnotto swims for Tampa Elite Aquatics in Florida. Over the summer, she competed at the Southern Age Group Zone Championships where she earned long course best times in the 200 (2:21.64) and 400 (4:50.28) freestyles as well as the 400 IM (5:38.64). She also swam a 9:50.18 in the 800 freestyle which was just off of her best time of 9:50.00 which she had set a week prior.

She has already continued her success into the fall as she achieved numerous best times at the beginning of December. Those best times included the 50 (26.65), 100 (56.67), 1000 (10:50.60), and 1650 (17:51.64) freestyles as well as the 100 backstroke (1:04.12).

Fonnotto began her senior year this fall at Sunlake High School in Sunlake, FL.

Her best short course yards times are:

  • 200 freestyle: 2:01.09
  • 500 freestyle: 5:21.97
  • 1000 freestyle: 10:50.60
  • 1650 freestyle: 17:51.64

Florida Tech is a private university located in Melbourne, Florida. The school is a member of the Sunshine Conference. The Sunshine Conference Championships did not occur last year because of COVID-19 but in 2020, the team finished seventh out of seven teams.

Based on her best times, she would have scored in the top 16 of the 1650 freestyle. It took a time of 5:08.30 to earn a second swim in the 500 freestyle. Her 500 freestyle best time would have been second on the team last year (no one swam the 1650 last year, most likely due to COVID-19).

Fonnotto will arrive on campus next fall as a member of the class of 2026 and join her older brother Jay Jay (John) who is currently a sophomore on the team.
