The University of Rochester women’s swimming and diving team earned a pair of wins over NCAA Division I competition to open the 2025-26 campaign on Saturday in its season-opening tri-meet inside the Speegle-Wilbraham Center.
Rochester defeated Canisius, 176.50-122.50 and edged Siena, 153.50-146.50, while the Saints topped the Golden Griffins, 155-143.
The Yellowjackets recorded six victories and 22 top-three results, led by Ariana Pasquella, who was a double-winner and broke her own pool record. Pasquella won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:06.13 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:23.65 in the 200 breaststroke.
Pasquella’s time broke her previous pool record by 0.34 seconds, while the senior also added a second-place tally as a member of UR’s ‘A’ 200 medley relay. Pasquella, along with Phoebe Hamblet, Addison Powers and Morgan Edstrom, took second in the 200 medley with a time of 1:50.36 to open the tri-meet. While Amelia Hardiman, Sarah Leevan, Sophia Dmytruk and Julianna Weaver combined for a 1:51.85 time on URochester’s ‘B’ relay to place fourth.
The Yellowjackets added event wins in both diving events, where Kaela Springer won the one-meter, and Julia Sides took home the three-meter. Springer finished first in the one-meter with a 240.35 score, while Sides placed third with 204.70 points.
In the three-meter, Sides finished atop the podium with 228.50 points, while Lilia MacKenzie joined Sides in the top three with a third-place result and 208.50 score.
Ally Mackey scored an event win in her first meet with a first-place finish and 2:10.13 time in the 200 butterfly, while Katelyn Packer won the 500 freestyle with a 5:24.93 time.
Mackey led a trio of Yellowjacket first-years in the top three of the 200 butterfly, as Ava Kaufman placed second with a 2:15.10 time, and Powers took third, touching the wall in 2:16.36. Kaufman also joined Packer in the 500 freestyle, finishing second with a time of 5:28.40, while Powers was URochester’s top finisher in the 100 butterfly, clocking in with a second-place time of 59.67.
Hardiman scored a pair of second-place results in the 200 backstroke (2:11.46) and 200 IM (2:15.49) with another Yellowjacket finishing right behind her in both events. Hamblet took third in the 200 backstroke, finishing a second behind Hardiman (2:12.34), while Mackey came in behind Hardiman in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.75.
Julianne Weaver added another second-place tally and a pair of top-three results, one of six first-years that placed in the top three on the day for the Yellowjackets. Weaver finished second in the 50 freestyle (24.56), ahead of Edstrom, who clocked in at 24.68 in third place, and third in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 54.39.
Following URochester’s opening medley relay, Rachel Ruminer paced the ‘Jackets in the 1000 freestyle, placing third with a time of 11:24.08, while Hamblet was the ‘Jackets’ top finisher in the 100 backstroke with a fourth-place time of 1:01.99.
The Yellowjackets ‘A’ relay team of Edstrom, Adele Hellstrom, Leevan and Weaver then wrapped up Rochester’s day in the 200 freestyle relay, taking second with a time of 1:40.96 to help secure the victories.
Rochester will look to keep things rolling when it heads to Cortland, NY, for a dual meet against SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
The University of Rochester men’s swimming & diving team fell to NCAA Division I Canisius University, 168-125, on Saturday in their first meet of the 2025-26 season inside the Speegle-Wilbraham Center.
Rochester opened the year with seven first-place results and 18 top-three finishes, led by a trio of double-winners in Ben Friedberg, Brendan Habert and Max McClung.
Friedberg scored an individual win in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 21.25 seconds as URochester’s top finisher, and then swam the anchor leg of Rochester’s 200 freestyle relay, combining with Demo Hong, Sebastian Gans and Connor Kann to wrap up the meet with an event win in the relay with a time of 1:26.97.
Nate Attwell, Tommy Zeliph, Venden Berge and Jayden Proctor added another top-three result for the ‘Jackets in the 200 freestyle relay, placing third with a time of 1:31.50.
Habert took home event wins in both diving events, and was joined on the podium by Max Wozinski in both the one and three-meter dives. Habert topped the podium in the three-meter dive with a 220.50-point score, while Wozinski took second with 208.85 points.
In the one-meter, Habert scored 208.90 points to finish first, while Wozinski again took second with 196.95 points.
McClung came in first in both the 100 backstroke (51.81) and 100 butterfly (51.19), and also paced the Yellowjackets in the 200 backstroke and 200 medley relay. McClung took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.39, and swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay, leading Max Gjevre, Hong and Friedberg to a second-place result and 1:36.99 time.
Gans also finished in the top three of the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.91, while Gjevre was URochester’s top finisher in three other events, the 100 breaststroke (5th, 1:01.35), the 200 breaststroke (4th, 2:20.29) and the 200 IM (3rd, 2:05.27).
The Yellowjackets’ last event win on the day came in the 1,000 freestyle, where Tyler Yeung and Matthew Spence finished 1-2. Yeung took first with his 10:09.45 time, while Spence touched the wall in 10:14.51, good for second place.
In the 200 butterfly, another pair of newcomers, Patrick Li and Ryan Bowering, earned two top-three results, with Li finishing second with a time of 2:03.02, while Bowering clocked in at 2:04.32, good for third.
Attwell added URochester’s last top-three result in the 500 freestyle, coming in third with a time of 4:57.25, and also paced the ‘Jackets earlier in the day in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:47.84, good for fourth.
In the 100 freestyle, Kann was Rochester’s top finisher, touching the wall in 48.39 seconds, good for fourth.
The Yellowjackets will be back in the pool next Saturday, Oct. 25, when they head to Cortland, NY, for a dual meet against SUNY Cortland beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Canisius men’s swimming and diving team scored a 168-125 win over the University of Rochester, while the Yellow Jacket women’s team posted a 176.5-122.5 victory over the Golden Griffin women’s team in tri-match Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.
The Canisius women’s team competed against Siena as well on Saturday, and fell to the Saints by a score of 155-143.
The Griffs started the day off in style, with both the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay teams scoring first-place finishes. The women’s team of sophomore Daphne Mead and juniors Cassandra Ercoli, Leyna Swanson and Evie Leighton took top-honors in the first event of the day by besting a Siena relay team by 0.02 seconds. In the men’s 200-yard medley relay, the team of Elliot Somers, Sam Vidal, Toby Mayfield and Peyton Gilliland finished first with a time of 1:34.55, which was nearly a full three seconds in front of second-place Rochester.
Mead won multiple events on Saturday, as she touched the wall first in both the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM. Her time of 2:06.25 in the 200 backstroke was not only 5.21 seconds faster than the next closest swimmer, it also set a new pool record at Rochester’s Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center.
Leighton recorded a pair of first-place finishes as well for the Blue and Gold. She won the 200-yard freestyle race with her time of 1:56.92, and then followed that performance by winning the 100-yard freestyle event. Junior Lauren Martin also won an event, posting a victory in the 1,000-yard free with a time of 11:13.55.
In the men’s competition, Vidal won the 100-yard breaststroke by more than a full two seconds before cruising to a victory in the 500-yard freestyle. Somers took top-honors in the 200-yard freestyle race and junior Luke Critchlow placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 2:00.85. Sophomore Giovanni Poggio also won two events, touching the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM.
The swimming and diving teams will open the home portion of the 2025-26 season Oct. 24 when the teams host Geneseo at the ECC Flickinger Center Pool in downtown Buffalo. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Siena Swimming and Diving made a strong showing at the meet against Canisius and the University of Rochester, with standout performances by many including Gabrielle Rentosa and freshman Clara Samko highlighting the day. Siena earned a victory over its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent in Canisius, 155-143, while Rochester came away with a 153.50-146.50 win.
Siena’s performance in the meet against Canisius was highlighted by several strong individual and relay finishes. Rentosa secured a first-place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 59.93, contributing significantly to the team’s overall performance. Samko also delivered an impressive victory in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Her winning time of 24.04 in the 50 free not only secured her first place but also marked a top ten performance time, ranking fifth on the list. She later took home another win in the 100 fly, topping the competition in 59.39.
The 200 Yard Freestyle Relay saw Siena’s ‘A’ team of Samko, Rentosa, Julia Filiault, and Mea Amedio clinch first place with a time of 1:38.98. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, Siena’s ‘A’ team, featuring Rentosa, Samko, Amedio, and Kayla Lombardo achieved a second-place finish with a time of 1:48.89.
GayLynn Kirn took third in the 200 free in 1:57.76 and was just ahead of Amedio, who placed fourth in 2:00.22. Amedio later finished second in the 100 free in 54.10. Carsyn Ide also enjoyed a third-place showing in the 100 back (1:01.49).
In the distance events, Natalie Blume stood out with a second-place finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle, clocking in at 10:09.82. Skylar Ricard also took fourth in the event, clocking in at 11:26.07. Claire Donlon’s performance in diving was notable as she placed second in both the 1-meter (222.15) and 3-meter (217.20) events, adding valuable points to the team’s tally.
Julia Mihok was pivotal in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, capturing third in the 100 (1:09.19) and second with a time of 1:09.19 in the 200.
The next challenge for Siena takes place on November 1 as they host Merrimack and New Hampshire at the Siena Swim Center, with competition beginning at 11 a.m.
