Curtis Anchors In 22.7 As Italians Set New World Record In Mixed 4×50 Free Relay (1:27.26)

2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Italians won their third relay in as many days at the European Short Course Championships on Thursday, soaring to a new world record in the mixed 4×50 freestyle relay.

The Italian quartet of Leonardo Deplano (20.97), Lorenzo Zazzeri (20.51), Silvia di Pietro (23.07) and Sara Curtis (22.71) combined for a time of 1:27.26, knocking off the three-year-old world and European Record of 1:27.33 set by France at the 2022 Short Course World Championships.

The previous Italian Record stood at 1:28.28, set by Alessandro Miressi, Zazzeri, Jasmine Nocentini and di Pietro at the 2023 SC Euros, where they won the silver medal behind Great Britain. That British team set a Championship Record of 1:27.75 in winning that race, which Italy also took down on Thursday.

On the anchor leg, Curtis’ 22.71 split stands up as the second-fastest of all-time, only trailing the 22.62 dropped by Emma McKeon at the 2022 SC Worlds.

In the race itself, Italy sat in 3rd place after the first exchange, with Jere Hribar leading off in 20.70 to give Croatia the early advantage, with Hungary sitting in 2nd after Szebasztian Szabo led off in 20.92.

Zazzeri’s 20.51 split, which was the fastest in the field, vaulted the Italians into the lead and they never looked back, ultimately winning gold by nearly eight-tenths of a second, with Hungary claiming silver in a National Record of 1:28.04.

Also setting National Records in the final were Poland (1:28.55), Denmark (1:29.45), Spain (1:30.52) and Croatia (1:30.70).
