After losing to Michigan in meet 5, the Lady Volunteers will face the Arizona State women for 3rd place. The two teams have already raced, with Tennessee winning 25-19. The same story goes for the men’s side, where the Cavaliers will have a rematch against Michigan after losing 20-24. This battle for 3rd is the same matchup as meet 4.

Today’s events will mix all of yesterday’s with all of those from Day 1, excluding the 400s (i.e. 400 free relay, 400 medley relay, and 400 IM).

Scoring Note:

The scoring system is markedly different than normal dual meet scoring. Each individual race consists of three head-to-head matchups, and the winner of each earns one point, and the overall winners gains one more point. We’ll list the results 1st-6th in order of time, but we’ll also include an asterisk next to the three swimmers who won their head-to-head matchups.

You’d think the UVA men weren’t at the meet according to the programs Instagram.

Reminds me of last season when the women had more coverage than the men during men’s ncaas 😭

I’ll be a Notre Dame swimmer and put money on the only posts with men this year are of Williamson and Heilman.
As a head coach you’d think DeSorbo would be in tune with that and not play favorites.

I’ll bet within 5years DeSorbo is gone. Exit Surveys are going to bite him hard.

I wouldn’t freak out about Heilman or Williamson yet. They still put up some solid times in this meet and had to race a ton of events in 4 days. If this was a standard Midseason event I bet we would’ve seen some PB’s from each of them

A ton of events? Didn’t they only swim relays yesterday? You’re making it worse 😂

Actually, the day they swam only relays was Friday, not Saturday. Here is the full event schedule for Heilman and Williamson:

Both swimmers (400 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay)

Meet 4 – Michigan (Saturday)
Heilman (200 Medley Relay, 200 Fly, 200 Free Relay)

Meet 6 – Michigan (Sunday)
Heilman (200 Medley Relay, 200 Fly, 200 IM, 200 Free Relay)

Heilman swam 9 times and Williamson 8 during the three-day meet and had Virginia’s 200 Free Relay been a tenth of a second faster on Saturday, it would have needed to swim in a… Read more »

If a swimmer does 3 prelim/finals individuals and 4 relays over a midseason meet, that would be 10 swims. They’re doing less than that.

Your math is correct, but how many freshmen did ten swims? Campbell McKean, the number 3 recruit, did eight, but he doesn’t get criticized since he won’t be selected to swim a free relay and he isn’t at UVA. Also, you’re comparing prelim swims to scoring swims from the dual meet format. Additionally, Virginia just missed an additional dual meet on Saturday, where these swimmers would have needed to go again and would have likely reached at least ten swims.

Did they perform an exceptional number of swims compared to others? No. Did they fail to show up and swim relays only as some seem to imply, also no.

I feel like people are gonna use UVa as a scapegoat if Williamson doesn’t pan out, but honestly I’ve had doubts about him for years now. He’s been wildly inconsistent, and underperforms at high profile meets (Olympic trials, winter jrs, Nationals all before joining UVA). His talent is unquestionable, but he has never shown he can make the most of it

I’m with you on that point, for the most part.

No, we’ve been saying it since he destroyed NTN. Karma

Interesting development for Tenn women over the weekend…Jansen and Brown might be 4-5 relay swimmers now. And which relay do we leave Spink off of?

In only one try each, Brown’s 21.88 made her the fourth fastest LV with a 50 flying start this weekend. And Jansen’s 22.08 put her 6th (on the last race of a grueling weekend.)

Meanwhile:
Spink flat: 21.30, 21.40, 21.25, 21.35
Spink flying: 21.27, 21.22
Bocska flat: 22.57, 22.32, 22.61
Bocska flying: 22.23, 21.75
Armen flat: 22.50
Armen flying: 22.15, 22.10, 21.74, 21.91
Crooks flat: 22.33, 22.38, 22.55
Crooks flying: 22.06, 22.56

Similar in the 100 with Jansen’s 47.50 split. Brown didn’t do a 100,… Read more »

Adding Brown to relays might be the smart way to go. Now with 200 IM and 200 fly on the same day, will she do that double? Looks like she can sprint too. Lady Vols looked good, just lacking in depth at the moment

Armen and Brown are leveling up in a major way. Daley and Robertson with some big PBs in short time as well. Claborn been dropping all season but was off this weekend.

Hirai solves a lot if she can make it to campus. At this point, could see her slotting into backstroke on the medleys. Our backstroke group is deep but lacks an ace who can get us some clean water on those relays. She’s a 2-3 second improvement on the 400 whether she does fly or back.

Crooks is biggest key IMO. She’s looking explosive underwater but think she’s still working back from a shoulder injury and it’s showing on top of the water.

Every single top 20 recruit who has raced at midseason so far has gone a best time at their midseason meet in least 1 event except 5.

Those 5 include all 3 of UVA’s top 20 recruits: Mercer, Heilman, Williamson.

18.73 is a best time for Williamson.
Edited to say that was a split and not lead off.

Heilman and Williamson are still swimming well this season; Mercer/Szobota/Amlicke are gonna need to step it up to live up to the hype of the class. Chris Smith couldn’t arrive sooner…

Amlicke was from our area and every single inseason meet he would swim SO slow. Like 51 100 back slow, but somehow whenever a championship meet came around he would put up top nation times in backstroke. Hoping he’ll do the same thing at UVA

Williamson noticeably cramped up in that 500

I saw him tire after going for it, being passed, and realizing he wasn’t going to go back past the folks who had passed him.

And I’m sure he realized he still had a leg on the 4 x 50 Free relay (:18.73 like a champion).

I saw nothing that could fairly be referenced as ‘cramped up.’

If he keeps swimming like this, Williamson needs to get as far away from UVA as possible

He needs Bob. He’s wasting his talents if he does not hit the portal to Texas.
Bob is turning his recruits and everybody else’s recruits into legitimate NCAA title threats and International stars

He won’t go to Texas. He has to be the star on the team he’s on. Can’t handle swimming with the big dogs.

Which is funny because he’s second fiddle to Heilman on UVA’s team

Ask any of the old teams aside from LAC that he’s been on, heck even ask the Keller Coach and I’d bet they confirm this
