Crimson Tide Scores A Big Win With Verbal From Native Son Will Freeman

Will Freeman, from Birmingham AL, has verbally committed to swim at the University of Alabama starting with the 2014-15 season.

It’s a straight shot down the I20 from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa, a little less than an hour’s drive. The Tide did a great job keeping their native son in-state. He is a senior at Spain Park High School in Hoover, AL where, as a member of the Spain Park swim team, he has won the state championships in the 200 and 500 free three years in a row. At the AHSAA State Swimming and Dive Meet in December 2012, Freeman broke his own state record in the 200 free, winning the title in 1:38.22. He was also state champion in the 500 with a 4:30.34. In 2011 he went 1:40/4:33 and in 2010, 1:42/4:38.

In addition to the midrange freestyles he should provide some depth to the distance group as well. Swimming for Birmingham Swim League at 2013 Summer Juniors in Irvine, Freeman finished seventeenth in the 1500 in 15:47 and turned out an 8:20 800, in addition to B-final finishes in the 400 (3:58) and 200 (1:52). He also went a best time in the 200 fly (2:04) at that meet.

Freeman’s times rank in the top 10 for the 2012-13 season and are within a second of Alabama’s all-time top ten. Will Freeman should be a terrific addition to the Crimson Tide’s lineup for the next four years.

Freeman is a two-time member of the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team with a 4.33 GPA.
