Craig Benson Breaks Scottish 50 Breast Record at BUCS Championships

During prelims on day 2 of the 2015 British University & College Sports (BUCS) Championship meet, Stirling’s Craig Benson has cracked a Scottish National Record in the 50 SCM breaststroke.

During prelims on Saturday morning, Benson swam a 27.03 to break Ross Murdoch’s 2013 record of 27.06.

This year’s meet is as star-studded as the short course meet ever is, and includes several Olympic hopefuls: Benson among them.

Though he’s the biggest-name breaststroker at this year’s meet, Benson won’t be racing alone in the 50 breaststroke final. Loughborough’s Andrew Weatheritt is not far behind him after prelims, qualifying 2nd in 27.21. Loughborough’s Lauren Carnol, a star of the Belgium National Team, is also lurking back as the 6th qualifier – and he’s capable of getting down under 27 seconds as well.

After one abbreviated, timed-final day of competition at Ponds Forge, the deep team from Loughborough, who has dominated this meet for a generation, leads the team scoring.
