Concord Carlisle Girls, St. John’s Prep Boys Stay On Top At Massachusetts Division I State Meet

There were two familiar champions at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I Winter Swimming and Diving Championships. The Concord Carlisle girls won their third straight championship, finishing 39 points ahead of runner-up Amherst Regional.

On the boys’ side, St. John’s Prep won its 18th title in 20 years, although this time it was a lot closer than in the past.

After earning double the points of runner-up Westford Academy last year, St. John’s Prep was only 10 points better than Westford this year.

Girls’ Recap

Concord Carlisle had a pair of event wins, starting when Audrey Herz captured the 1-meter diving competition with 465.85 points.

Senior Sarah Fortier later repeated as champion in the 100 breast, clocking a time of 1:08.88.

The individual standouts were Longmeadow senior Lilah Doherty and Sharon senior Feining Huang.

Committed to New Hampshire, Doherty won the 50 free in a personal best 23.73, and then swam a personal best 55.65 to claim the 100 fly.

Doherty also led off in 24.84  to help Longmeadow win the 200 free relay in 1:39.17. Other team members were  Bella Strebel (24.50), Chloe Anderson (24.93) and Mila Szyluk (24.90).

Huang, a Bryant commit, won the 200 free in 1:52.19 and then the 100 back in a personal best of 55.81 after finishing 2nd in the event last year. Huang won the 200 IM at last year’s meet.

Other event winners were:

  • Westfield senior Makayla Ellis, a Boston University commit, won the 200 IM in 2:09.86.
  • Kayden McKibbin, a Grafton senior and Bryant University commit, won the 100 free in a personal best of 51.90.
  • Liv Parent, a senior from Minnechaug Regional, won the 500 free in a personal best of 4:55.72.
  • In the 200 medley relay, Amherst Regional’s team of Rowan Albertson (26.62), Teagen Demers (31.95), Audrey Spiridopoulos (26.52) and Emory Albertson (24.33) won in 1:49.52.
  • Amherst Regional also won the 400 free relay behind the team of Demers (55.97), Finnley Chambers (55.22), Emory Albertson (54.75) and Rowan Albertson (53.14) in 3:39.08.

Boys’ Recap

It was a lot closer than in years past, but St. John’s Prep still managed to prevail in a meet where the top-five teams were separated by 47 points.

Sophomore Brendan Titley was the leading point getter for St. John’s Prep, taking 2nd in the 100 free in a personal best of 46.68 while also being a part of the St. John’s 200 free relay team that finished 2nd.

The only individual multi-event winner  was Westward Academy senior Aiden Gouldson.

Committed to Kenyon College, Gouldson reigned in the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 free in a personal best time of 20.48 and also topping the 100 free field in 45.17. He won the 100 and 200 free at last year’s meet.

Gouldson also had a 24.17 back split to help Westford Academy win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:36.89. Other team members were Jake Barrett (26.63), A.J. Aggarwal (24.35) and Aaron Gao (21.74).

Other event winners were:

  • Sharon junior Leo Tran won the 200 free in a personal best 1:39.41 after finishing 2nd last year.
  • Franklin sophomore Zach Pecora won the 200 IM in a time of 1:52.62.
  • Minnechaug Regional junior Collin Purcell claimed the 1-meter diving title with 532.90 points.
  • Brookline senior Phiip Wang captured the 100 fly in 50.63.
  • Alex Parent, a senior for Minnechaug Regional, won the 500 free in 4:30.54.
  • In the 200 free relay, the Xaverian Brothers team of Matt Spalding (21.62), Henry Schwartz (23.39), Mark Ehrenzeller (21.34), and Jack Herman (20.78) won in a time of 1:27.13.
  • Jack Eaddy, a senior from Lincoln-Sudbury, won the 100 back in 52.68.
  • Brian Story, a senior from Haverhill who has committed to Gettysburg College, won the 100 breast in 57.26 after placing 4th in the event last year.
  • Minnechaug Regional won the 400 free relay behind the team of Zach Parent (47.83), Jon Kowalski (47.42), Ben Latourelle (49.90) and Alex Parent (47.96) in 3:13.11.
