Mulcare dropped almost a full second from his time, clocking in at 1:38.56 to tie NC State’s Hennessey Stuart as the 9th fastest performer ever in the event.
The final tallies are in: 38 different men broke 19 seconds at some point during the 2017 men’s Division I NCAA Champinships, together accounting for an incredible 81 swims of 18.99 or better.
9th-seeded Justin Ress has scratched the 200 backstroke in favor of the 100 freestyle at day 3 prelims, and he gets some instant help as 9-seed Matt McHugh has scratched the event.
The Longhorns have practically secured the team victory at this point, but the battle for runner-up is still relatively close between Cal and Florida.
This morning’s 200 medley relay was fast enough that very few teams will have alternate lineup options tonight, perhaps in response to a few high-profile miscues in prelims of the 400 medley.

Cal currently holds the runner up position, but Florida is just 4.5 points back. The NC State Wolfpack and Indiana Hoosiers round out the top 5 on today’s scoreboard, and aren’t out of reach of a top 3 spot by any means.
Though they finished 2nd to Texas, the Bears took down the American Record in a blistering 3:01.51. That took down the former American Record mark of 3:01.60 set by Cal at the 2015 NCAA Meet.
