Colgate Raiders Split With Patriot League Rivals Lehigh

Colgate played host to Lehigh on Saturday in Hamilton, New York. The Raiders split the dual meet, with the women winning narrowly over the Mountain Hawks, 147-139, and the men falling 190-88.

Women’s Meet

With only an eight-point spread by the end of the meet, every single point counted for the Raider women. You could tell it would be a good battle when Colgate got things rolling with a 3:55.58 medley relay win from the quartet Meghan Shroyer, Cammie Kirby, Maggie Carney, and Rosannah Petit, only .18 ahead of Lehigh’s Alissa Leung, Kim Weyand, Mary Samuels, and Kaitlyn Ruffing.

Colgate’s Megan Cohara racked up the points with three individual wins: the 1000 free (10:24.61), 100 back (57.59), and 500 free (5:03.12). Lehigh’s Courtney Patterson took second in the 1000 (10:48.36) and 500 (5:08.33). In the 100 back, Shroyer edged Lehigh’s Leung 59.24 to 59.37 for second.

The Raiders had another multiple winner in Flora Hanson. She narrowly beat Carolyn Koch of Lehigh in the 200 free, 1:54.68 to 1:54.85, then went on to top Lehigh’s Leung in the 200 back, 2:05.84 to 2:06.99.

Kirby helped the Raiders with a pair of wins in the breaststroke events. She clocked a 1:07.50 to touch out teammate Talia Fishbein (1:07.64) in the 100. She then went 2:27.83 in the 200, beating Lehigh’s Weyand by .71. Weyand was also third in the 100.

Sydney Bornstein of Lehigh picked up a victory with a strong 2:07.38 in the 200 fly. The Raiders’ Bernadette Tankle took second with 2:09.74. Bornstein’s teammate Ruffing followed suit winning the next two events in a row: the 50 and 100 frees. Ruffing was the only woman under 24 seconds in the 50; she touched in 23.78. Second was Colgate’s Petit with 24.21. In the 100, Ruffing out-touched Petit by .03, winning 52.34 to 52.37.

The 100 fly featured a 1-2 sweep from Lehigh’s Kelly Carroll (58.63) and Mary Samuels (58.85). Carney of Colgate took third in 59.11.

Lehigh’s Patterson earned a narrow victory in the 200 IM, going 2:08.34 to Hanson’s 2:08.43.

Diving points were split fairly evenly, with Colgate’s Chloe Russack (222.08) winning 1-meter diving over teammate Austin Anderson and Lehigh’s Emily Speakman. Speakman won the 3-meter event uncontested.

Lehigh took the final 200 free relay by a two-second margin but it wasn’t enough to overcome the point deficit. Still, Julianne Koch, Meghan Thompson, Carolyn Koch, and Ruffing combined for a quick 1:36.71, more than two seconds faster than their seed time. Colgate’s Petit, Sami Wary, Madison Fitzgerald, and Megan Gallagher went 1:38.60 for second.

Men’s Meet

The Lehigh men won their medley relay 3:33.89-3:34.79 over Colgate. The Mountain Hawks’ winning team included Justin Kostelnik, Kevin Huntley, Jacob Moyar, and Jamal Willis, while Des Cairns, Mark Hilton, Dominic Wilkins, and Andrew Hacker represented the Raiders.

Lehigh’s Patrick Champagne knocked a couple seconds off his seed time and won the 1000 by four when he touched in 9:58.88. Colgate’s Paul Kersjes (10:02.89) was second.

Justin White of Lehigh won two, and almost three, sprint freestyle events. He took the 200 (1:43.41) and the 100 (47.42) but finished second to teammate Willis in the 50, with 21.63 to Willis’ 21.22. Carter Christensen of Colgate took third in that race with 22.00. In the 200, Owen Dunbar of Lehigh went 1:45.86 for second. Colgate’s Hacker (1:46.27) was third. White’s third sprint freestyle race was the most exciting, though: he won the 100 by .03 over Colgate’s Cairns (47.45).

Cairns notched a win of his own, though, going 51.66 to take the 100 back by several body lengths. Dean Shafritz of Lehigh came in second in 54.90.

Lehigh went 1-2 in the 100 breast behind Huntley (59.84) and Tyler Lessner (1:02.15). Haakon Brekke of Colgate finished third with 1:02.38. In the 200 it was Huntley (2:12.34), Lehigh teammate Mike Wheaton (2:17.44), and Colgate’s Brekke (2:18.82).

The Mountain Hawks’ Moyar had a first and a second in the butterflies. He won the 200 with 1:55.10 but touched second in the 100 behind teammate Jake Hassel, 51.69 to 52.45. Colgate’s highest finishers were Wilkins in the 200 and Danny Graham in the 100.

In the 200 back, Justin Kostelnik led a 1-2-3-4 Lehigh sweep. His winning time was 1:57.44. Graham was again the fastest Raider.

Moyar came back for another win, this time in the 500 free (4:49.47). Behind him were teammates Jake Greene (4:51.71) and Champagne (4:51.82), and Colgate’s Wilkins (4:52.29). Wilkins scored first place in the 200 IM with 2:05.76. Greene swam exhibition in 1:57.88.

Lehigh’s Daniel Bateman won both diving events; Colgate’s Tommy Fretz was second in the 1-meter.

The 200 free relay gave more points to Colgate; by then Lehigh was only swimming exhibition. Colgate was the faster relay, anyway, touching in 1:26.26 behind Milos Gak, Cairns, Christensen, and Hacker.
