City of Long Beach holding public meeting on Belmont Pool project’s budget and design

As the next step in the ongoing renovation of the historic Belmont Pool, the city of Long Beach, California has called for a public meeting to inform the public on the project’s design and financial scope, and to get public feedback on the current design plans.

The meeting will be held in two weeks, on Wednesday, September 17th at 5:30 p.m. at the Will Rogers Middle School Auditorium in Long Beach.

The Stakeholder Advisory Committee is looking for public feedback after its current design plan only passed the committee by the narrowest of margins. According to Lucy Johnson, a community leader and Committee member connected to the aquatics community, the committee was split, with 6 voting for the current plan, 6 voting for a slightly more expensive plan and one choosing not to vote.

You can read more about the Committee’s current plan here. Those who are out of town and cannot attend the meeting are encouraged to provide their input to Johnson via e-mail at [email protected], and she’ll pass along a compilation of citizen opinions at the meeting.

The Belmont Plaza Pool is one of the more notable pools in USA Swimming history, having hosted the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1968 and 1976, plus multiple NCAA and college conference championships.

The announcement of the meeting reads as follows, and can also be found on the city’s website.
