CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept their dual meet against Kenyon College on senior day on Friday.

“This was a strong start for the second half of the season for the Bearcats today, head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said.  “I think we looked really sharp racing and have a few things to fine-tune over the next few weeks but we are looking great. I’m proud of our seniors tonight and their leadership throughout their time here.”

Neither UC team disappointed on senior night as the Cincinnati men’s team won 193-106 and the Cincinnati women’s team won 170-130 against the Owls. In total, the  Bearcats won 22 events throughout the meet.

Leading the way for the UC men was fifth-year senior Conner Funke who picked up event wins in both the 100-yard (56.29) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.71). Funke now has seven individual event wins this season, including four in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Joining Funke in earning multiple event wins were freshman Joleigh Crye and junior Jessica Davis, whom each picked up two individual event wins and a relay crown.

Crye’s outstanding freshman season continued as she won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.26) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.40). This marks the fourth time this season she has won the 100-yard butterfly in a dual meet.

Davis placed first in both the 100-yard (52.27) and 200-yard freestyle (1:52.98). Both Davis and Crye were on the women’s 400-yard relay team that won with a time of 3:30.00.

Two other seniors ended their day with event wins. Senior Spencer Sehlhorst won the men’s 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:59.97 and senior Calvin Coetzee won the men’s 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:40.71.

For the first time this season, the Bearcats swept the diving events in a dual meet. In the men’s 3-meter diving event, freshman Preston Landolt broke the 300-point mark claiming first with a final score of 304.20.

In the 1-meter diving event, sophomore Will Claus won the men’s event with a score of 285.15 points and freshman Elizabeth Noble won the women’s event, tallying 227.33 points. Freshman Rachel Casebolt took first in the women’s 3-meter dive scoring 209.93.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Going against an NCAA Division I opponent on the road, the Kenyon College women’s swimming and diving team found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard for the first time this season, falling 170-130 against the University of Cincinnati.

The Owls opened the competition with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Olivia SmithJennah FadelyGwenyth Eisenbeis, and Alexandra White combined to clock a time of 1:44.63, good for an NCAA ‘B’ cut.

The Bearcats claimed the top two spots in the next two tests, the 1000- and 200-yard freestyle races, to take the overall edge. Kenyon got back on track when Smith earned her second victory in as many races, finishing in first by .16 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke. Her 55.46 pace cleared the ‘B’ cut threshold.

Fadely was narrowly edged out in the 100-yard breaststroke, but her second-place time of 1:02.70 still earned a ‘B’ cut. Ania Axas kept the back-and-forth affair going with a win for the Owls in the 200-yard butterfly. The senior notched a 2:05.28, clearing a B Cut by .12 seconds.

In the 50-yard freestyle, two Owls sprinted ahead and scored a big 1-2 finish for Kenyon. White, a senior, clocked in a 23.16, while fellow senior Ella Campbell finished in 23.59 seconds. Both times fell under the 23.63 ‘B’ cut mark.

White nearly went for two wins in a row when she got back in the pool for the 100-yard freestyle, but she reached the wall just .08 seconds slower than the winning Cincinnati swimmer. The race was incredibly close at the top as the third-place Cincinnati competitor touched just .01 second after White.

The Bearcats went 1-3-4 and 1-2-4 in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke to build an edge, but Fadely picked up a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke to help the Owls finish 1-3-4.

Cincinnati claimed the top two spots in the 500-yard freestyle before following it up with a win in the 100-yard butterfly. Smith (56.61) and Axas (57.90) came second and third, respectively, but the Bearcats maintained control.

Gabrielle Wei recorded Kenyon’s sixth and final victory, claiming the top spot in the 400-yard individual medley after clocking a time of 4:32.22.

Two quartets of Owls finished second and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the dual. First-year Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault led off for the second-place team that included Smith, Campbell, and White. The third-place squad was not far behind as Fadely and Axas started things off before sophomore Sydney Srnka and first-year Gwenyth Eisenbeis anchored.

The contests also included one- and three-meter diving, which took place at the start of the dual, and the scores off the board helped the Bearcats compile their final margin of 170-130. The Bearcats took the top spot from one meter up, but Kenyon’s Katarina Ilic finished second with a score of 198.30. The junior paced the Owls at the three-meter mark, but her 203.18 final score sat third behind a pair of Bearcats.

The Owls, who fell to 4-1 on the season, were not operating with their full roster. The remaining Kenyon contingent was in Oberlin, Ohio for a double-dual against Oberlin College and Ohio Northern University.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Kenyon College men’s swimming and diving team got back to action Friday, winning two individual and two relay events at the University of Cincinnati, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the host Bearcats, who tallied a 193-106 victory over the Owls.

Kenyon senior Cherantha De Silva had a fantastic meet and was involved in all four of the Owls’ event wins. In individual events, De Silva won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.53 seconds. He later went on to win the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 48.97.

In relay competition, De Silva swam legs on Kenyon’s meet-opening 200-yard medley team and meet-closing 400-yard freestyle team. In the 200 medley, he joined Yurii KosianLuis Weekes and Marko Krtinic to post a winning time of 1:30.41. In the 400 freestyle, he teamed up with Djordje DragojlovicDaniel Brooks and Krtinic to crank out a first-place time of 3:03.38.

There were 16 events contested and the NCAA Division I Bearcats claimed wins in a dozen of them.

Behind some of those Cincinnati wins, Kenyon chalked up multiple runner-up showings, including Kosian in the 100-yard backstroke (49.99) and 200-yard backstroke (1:52.66), Weekes in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.34), Krtinic in the 100-yard butterfly (49.50) and Ethan Manske in the 400-yard individual medley (4:05.21).

In diving events, Kenyon was led by first-year Owen Peterson, who placed fourth on both the one-meter and three-meter boards.

Kenyon, which slipped to 4-1 on the season, did not compete as an entire team. While a portion of the roster was at Cincinnati, the rest of the roster was at Oberlin College, competing against both the host Yeomen and the Polar Bears from Ohio Northern University.
