DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis head women’s swimming & diving coach Matt Macedo announced the appointments of Carl Weigley as his primary assistant and Adrianna Contreras as a volunteer assistant, thus completing his coaching staff heading into the 2021-22 season.

Phil Tonne continues to serve as the Aggie diving coach, now entering his 18th year at the helm of that squad.

“I am excited to start this new chapter at UC Davis with Phil, Carl and Adriana,” said Macedo, who assumed the program helm in May. “I have always enjoyed my time on deck with all three coaches and Carl and Adriana already have great chemistry from their time together at Pacific. I know I will learn from them and know the student-athletes will have excellent guidance in this year of transition.”

Weigley most recently served as a volunteer assistant at North Carolina State, which he joined in the summer of 2019. However, he is no stranger to California swimming: he was the assistant coach for two seasons at Pacific prior to his arrival with the Wolfpack, and spent the six previous years as an assistant at his alma mater, Fresno Pacific. During that span with the Sunbirds, Weigley directly mentored eight NAIA individual champions, another seven relay champions, and an NAIA Swimmer of the Year.

In fact, Weigley was a member of FPU’s original recruiting class, going on to establish the program as a national power. He won 11 individual and relay titles, took part in eight NAIA records and helped the Sunbirds to national team titles in each of his junior and senior seasons. Weigley later competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter butterfly and freestyle events. Four years later, he returned to the Trials, where he placed 12th in the 100 fly.

Weigley, who originally hails from Tacoma, Washington, graduated from FPU in 2011 with a degree in exercise science.

“I am honored and excited to join the staff at UC Davis,” Weigley said. “Matt is someone I’ve known and respected for years, and I look forward to sharing the deck with him. I can’t wait to meet the girls and help Davis compete at the highest levels in the MPSF and beyond.”

Contreras served alongside Weigley at Pacific for two seasons, first as a director of operations (2017-18) then as an assistant coach (2018-19). She subsequently took the helm at Saint Francis Catholic High School in Sacramento while serving as senior group coach and social media manager at DART Sacramento.

An alumna of Stockton’s St. Mary’s High School, Contreras also has club coaching experience at Lodi Swim Club and Tiger Aquatics, and served on the staffs at the USA Swimming Zone Diversity Select Camp, Zone Select Camp and National Diversity Select Camp. She swam briefly at Cal State East Bay and is now completing her degree in business from Sacramento State.

“I am really thrilled to be a part of the Aggie family,” said Contreras. “I am excited about working with and learning from Coach Macedo and to be working with Coach Weigley again. The UC Davis team has a long history of success and I am excited to help build on the traditions of the team as we move forward. I cannot wait to work with each of our student-athletes and start the season soon.”

Contreras is also a certified soccer official, and has lent her expertise as a social media and marketing coordinator for the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association since 2020.

The complete 2021-22 UC Davis women’s swimming & diving schedule will be announced soon. The season will open with a Blue-Gold intrasquad meet in early October.
