The 2026 Spanish Open Trials concluded tonight from Mallorca, but not before we saw an additional two national records go by the wayside, both on the men’s side.
Racing in the final of the 100m breaststroke in Mallorca this evening, 19-year-old University of Florida Gator Nil Cadevall ripped a lifetime best of 1:00.30 to nab the gold.
Opening in 28.55 and closing in 31.75, Cadevall sliced .01 off his own former Spanish benchmark of 1:00.31 he put on the books at the 2025 edition of these championships.
Hugo Gonazalez notched a time of 1:00.95 to snag the silver, as Jorge Garcia produced 1:01.11 as the bronze medalist.
For Cadevall, his effort tonight fell just shy of the selection standard of 1:00.16 needed to qualify in the event for the European Championships; however, he already qualified in the 50m breast.
The next national record to bite the dust came at the hands of 18-year-old Luca Hoek in the 200m freestyle.
The C.N. Terrassa swimmer stopped the clock at a massive result of 1:46.10.
Hoek split 23.99/26.89 (50.88)/27.32/27.90 en route to victory, hitting the sole sub-1:47 effort of the field.
Miguel Perez-Godoy settled for the silver just under a full second behind in 1:47.09, with Cesar Castro rounding out the podium in 1:47.12.
28-year-old Castro was the former national record holder in this 2free event, having established the 1:46.46 Spanish standard in 2024. You can read more about Hoek’s history-making swim here.
Although not a national record, Ivan Martinez made the European Championships grade on his way to winning the men’s 50m backstroke.
Martinez punched a time of 24.76, erasing his former PB of 24.86 from last year, to clear the 25.05 European Championships selection standard.
Joining him under that threshold was Adrian Santos, who posted 24.99, as Martin Kizierowski bagged the bronze in 25.36.
Martinez now ranks 24th in the world on the season.
Additional European Championships qualifiers came in the women’s 200m free and 800m free events.
The former saw Ainhoa Campabadal get the job done in a rapid result of 1:57.86, easily dipping under the 1:58.18 selection standard.
That represented a big-time personal best for the 23-year-old, destroying her former PB of 1:58.47 put up for bronze at the Canet stop of this year’s Mare Nostrum Tour.
In the latter race, Maria De Valdes scored a winning effort of 8:32.56 for the decisive victory. She, too, qualified for the European Championships, hoping to give Spain some hardware in Paris at that prestigious meet.
