WORCESTER, Mass. – The Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team won 12 events, with 10 different Bison claiming first-place finishes in individual events, in a season-opening 198-102 victory over Holy Cross on Friday evening at the Hart Center Pool.

Massachusetts native Clara Renner, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, picked right up where she left off last season with wins in both of her events, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Freshman Natalia Gajecki was first in the pool to swim the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay, and she came back three events later to win the 100 back. Hanna Bingley, Samatha Benzija, and Sara Ketron rounded out the victorious medley relay. Ketron had a big day, as she also placed second to Renner in the 200 free and swam the lead leg on the winning 200 free relay to close out the meet.

Freshmen Tessa Feld and Alivia Wainwright also won events in their collegiate debuts. Feld won the 1,000 free, with classmate Keira Giles finishing third. Wainwright captured the 200 backstroke as part of a 1-2 finish with Sydney Dettmann. The Bison pair finished only two-tenths of a second apart.

Earlier in the meet, Dettmann won the 200 fly by more than four seconds. Kyla Kelly won the 100 breaststroke in a 1-2 finish with Kelly Byrne, and Kelly also anchored the winning 200 free relay. Byrne won the 500 free, six seconds ahead of freshman Emma Briganti in second place.

Sydney Jee and Benzija went 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke, and the Bison swept the top three places in the 200 IM with Virginia Hastings and freshmen Kennedy DeVeaux and Feld leading the pack.

Bucknell went 1-2 in both relays to rack up a 30-4 points advantage in those two events.

Holy Cross’ only two swimming wins came from Devin Brindle in the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. But the Bison went 2-3-4 in both to limit the Crusaders to just a one-point advantage in each race. Hastings was runner-up in the 50 by only three-hundredths of a second, and Jennifer Bolden took second in the 100 by only four-tenths of a second. Freshman Victoria Castro was third in both sprints, and she and Bolden also handled legs on the winning 200 free relay.

Holy Cross had the better of the two diving events. Natalie Penman took fourth on the 1-meter board, while freshman Dea Mielenz was third in the 3-meter event.

The Bison are right back in action on Saturday at Boston University at 1:30 p.m.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Alex Crossing and freshman Drew Davis won two events apiece, leading the Bucknell men’s swimming and diving team to a 163-137 victory over Holy Cross in Friday’s season opener at the Hart Center Pool. The Bison won eight events on the night and posted 1-2 finishes in four of them to gain some separation.

The meet got off to a lively start, as Holy Cross edged Bucknell by a mere eight-hundredths of a second in the 200-yard medley relay. William Shoemaker got the Bison on the board with a win in the 1,000 freestyle, and two events later, Davis and Caleb Hagadorn went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke.

The Crusaders picked up wins in the 200 free and 100 breaststroke, and Bucknell’s lead was only 48-45 until back-to-back 1-2 finishes in the 200 fly (Crossing and Shane Wynne in a photo finish) and 50 free (Finn Russell and Dante Buonadonna) bumped the margin up to 19 points.

Freshman Jason Kellerman, who earlier finished second in the 200 free, picked up his first collegiate win in the 200 backstroke. After classmate Evan Hepburn took second in the 200 breaststroke, Crossing and Finn Franks went 1-2 in the 500 free, Davis won the 100 fly, and Buonadonna captured the 200 IM to clinch the win.

Kellerman, Drew Greene, Russell, and Davis finished out the meet with a close second-place finish in the 200 free relay.

The Crusaders won both diving events, but the Bison went 2-3-4 in both. Connor Thurston, Jake Hagler, and Jackson Vinarub scored on the 3-meter board, and Thurston, Jack Krug, and Vinarub took the next three spots in the 1-meter event.

The Bison are right back in action on Saturday at Boston University at 1:30 p.m.
