Brown University Invitational: Friday Prelims Recap

The three-day Brown University Invitational began this morning at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Participating teams include Brown, Columbia (men only), Dartmouth, Princeton, Rider, and Yale (women only). This weekend, prelims will begin each day at 11 am, and finals are expected to commence at 6 pm. Friday’s events are as follows: 200 Freestyle Relay (finals only), 500 Freestyle, 200 IM, 50 Freestyle, Men’s 1 Meter Diving, and the 400 Medley Relay (finals only). Here’s your recap of the first prelims session:

500 Freestyle
Yale’s Eva Fabian took first in this morning’s prelims with a time of 4:50.82. AnnClaire Macart of Dartmouth took second in a time of 4:53.47, closely followed by Yale’s Isla Hutchington-Maddox (4:53.51) and Claire McIlMail of Princeton (4:53.56). In the men’s event, Rider University’s Zachary Molloy claimed first by over a second in a time of 4:30.32. Brown’s Cory Mayfield touched the wall in 4:31.95 to take second, while Zachary Molloy’s brother and teammate, William Molloy, placed third in 4:32.65.

200 IM
In the women’s event, Kina Zhou of Yale battled Beverly Nguyen of Princeton and Sydney Hirschi of Yale to finish first in a time of 2:02.23. Nguyen finished second in 2:02.38, and Hirschi touched third in 2:02.99. In the men’s event, Aaron Athanas of Dartmouth placed first in 1:49.25, the only time under 1:50 this morning. Corey Okubo of Princeton secured second in 1:50.46, followed by teammate Marco Bove in 1:51.19.

50 Freestyle
In the women’s event, Brown’s Kate Dillione claimed first in a time of 23.09. Yale’s Kina Zhou once again found herself in an event’s top three spots for tonight’s finals, finishing second in 23.18. Aja Grande of Brown placed third in 23.23. The top eight women were all under 23.55 seconds. Harrison Wagner of Princeton led the men’s event, finishing first in a time of 20.21. Behind Wagner were Stanley Wong of Columbia (20.75) and the tie of Matthan-Matthew Martir from Rider and Julian Mackrel of Princeton (20.82).

Men’s 1 Meter – Prelims will take place this afternoon at 1 pm, and Finals start at 6:30 pm.
