LARAMIE, Wyo. (10/1/22) – The University of Wyoming swimming & diving team hosted its annual Brown and Gold Meet on Saturday at Corbett Pool. The intrasquad competition marks the start of the meet season, and head coach Dave Denniston was pleased with how his athletes got after it.

“The nice thing about this team is they’re so competitive,” Denniston said. “They just want to win to win. It’s not, what’s-the-winner-get type of thing. The motivation and energy were intrinsic and authentic, and it was super fun to see.”

The competitiveness resulted in a very closely-contested meet. The Brown Team won 268.5-264.5, taking the women’s final score by a count of 140.5-120.5, while the Gold Team took the men’s side of things, 120-118.

Within that score were a bunch of races that featured athletes learning and growing. They either learned for the first time in college or became reacquainted with the nerves of being on the block, the precision necessary with each turn and the impact of finishing strong.

“This week, they found all the little nuances about being a better racer and a better diver,” Denniston said. “Seeing that this early in the season is really encouraging for us.”

Saturday represented an annual tradition, but Friday night featured a new event. It was the Brown, Gold & Old Meet, which included many alumni, both young and old, swimming alongside current swimmers in various events.

It was also an opportunity for many of the alumni to see the facility upgrades, donate and reconnect with a program that meant so much to them.

“What we saw from the alumni is they want to be invested,” Denniston said. “They want to follow our team, our program and our university throughout the season and support us.”

Wyoming’s first meet of the season is the DU Relays. That takes place Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. at El Pomar Natatorium on the campus of the University of Denver.
