Brasilia, Brazil Will Host the 2019 World University Games; Budapest Withdraws

Brasilia, Brazil will host the 2019 World University Games, FISU announced today.

Brasilia was the only remaining candidate for the event; Baku first withdrew in October, and then Budapest withdrew to focus on their hosting of the 2012 FINA World Championships (though they say they plan to re-bid after the completion of that event).

Brasilia will be the second Brazilian nation to host this massive multi-sport event for the university students of the world. The 3rd Universiade was hosted in Porto Alegre in 1963, which was also the last time that the event went to South America.

They also announced officially that Krasnoyarsk, Russia will host the 2019 Winter Universiade. Krasnoyarsk was the only remaining bidder.

A recent list of hosts for the Summer Universiade:

Year Games Number Summer host Games Number Winter Host

2015 XXVIII Gwangju,  South Korea XXVII Granada,  Spain
2017 XXIX Taipei,  Taiwan XXVIII Almaty,  Kazakhstan
