Boston University Downs Pool Records At UMass As Terriers Earn Sweep

AMHERST, Mass. – Highlighted by three pool records, the Boston University women’s swimming & diving team posted a 153-145 win at Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool.

Freshman Han Hoang set the pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.16 seconds while senior Lara Mitchell swam the fastest 100-yard backstroke in pool history at 56.23 seconds.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Stella Langenbach, senior Madison Kim, senior Sydney Sorbello and Hoang also set a pool record with a time of 3:27.84.

Junior Sophia Souza swept the diving events, posting a 287.70 in the 3-meter competition before adding a 253.80 in the 1-meter.

Hoang added a second win on the day with a time of 51.76 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle while fellow rookie Izzy Valantiejus placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:39.81).

Langenbach collected an individual win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.52) and classmate Haley Newman swam a 2:08.36 to place first in the 200-yard individual medley.

The Terriers will take next week off before returning to action at the Terrier Invite on Nov. 17-19.

AMHERST, Mass. – The Boston University men’s swimming & diving team earned its first dual win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 158-141 triumph at Massachusetts and senior Justin Lee set the pool record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.35 seconds.

Graduate student Kyle Falkstrom earned three wins on the day, finishing first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 55.93 seconds and 2:03.49, as well as the 200-yard individual medley (1:53.99).

Senior Dolan Grisbaum and sophomore Tony Ponomarev collected two wins each. Grisbaum touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:45.68) and the 500 free (4:42.47) while Ponomarev swept the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 50.87 and 1:51.12.

Freshman Jonathan Tsang took first place in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:53.31.

The Terriers also came out on top in the 200 medley relay as Ponomarev, Falkstrom, Lee and sophomore Ben Cho posted a time of 1:32.05.

BU will take next week off before returning to action at the Terrier Invite on Nov. 17-19.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team fell to Boston University on Saturday at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool. The Minutewomen dropped their dual meet against the Terriers, 153-145, while the Minutemen faltered, 158-141.

Sophomore Andrew Bell completed the one-meter dive with a score of 385.43 to break the previous record of 334.50 held by Jason Cook (2010-11), while earning a six-dive total of 397.28 in the three-meter dive, also breaking a previous record held by Jason Cook (2008-09). Both totals placed Bell in first on the all-time record board.

Women’s Swimming & Diving

The Minutewomen totaled 25 top-three finishes on the day, including eight first-place finishes.

Freshman Sophie Porter swam a time of 10:43.08, marking a season-best, in the 1,000 freestyle to claim second to kick off the individual events. Fellow classmate Beren Cakiroglu followed with a second-place finish of her own in the 200 freestyle, swimming a personal-best time of 1:52.67. Junior Anna Kwon had the third-best time in the 200 freestyle at 1:55.68 for a season-best.

In the 100 backstroke, senior Bri Williams earned second with a season-best time of 56.60, followed by senior Megan Mitchell (57.02) in third with her season-best. Freshman Lindsay Burbage (1:05.21) claimed the gold in the 100 breaststroke, while classmate Diya Ackerman-Vallala (1:06.57) took the silver.

Graduate student Summer Pierce was first in the 200 butterfly, recording a season-best time of 2:04.17, and senior Maggie Desmond swam a season-best time of 23.78 in the 50 freestyle for a second-place finish. A season-best time of 51.38 aided senior Caroline Mahoney to second place in the 100 freestyle.

A one-two finish in the 200 backstroke saw Mitchell finish with a season-best time of 2:02.58 in the event, followed by Williams with her season-best time of 2:04.18. Burbage earned her second gold of the day in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a season-best 2:24.26, while Kwon placed first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.06, marking a season-best. Pierce also garnered her second gold of the meet recording a season-best time of 56.66 in the 100 butterfly.

In the relays, the team of Williams, Burbage, Pierce and Desmond combined for a time of 1:43.68 in the 200 medley relay to finish first, while the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Cakirgolu, freshman Olga Stoura, Mahoney and Desmond earned second with a. time of 3:30.24.

Men’s Swimming & Diving

The Minutemen tallied 24 top-three finishes on the day, while collecting six gold medals.

Senior Wilson Dubois kicked off the men’s individual events with a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:55.53. The Minutemen recorded a podium sweep in the 200 freestyle with sophomore Sammy Quigg sitting atop with a season-best time of 1:41.18, followed by graduate student Emerson Kiefer (1:42.87) and senior Juan Montori (1:42.89) in second and third, respectively.

Freshman Aydin Erkan finished with a season-best time of 1:53.57 in the 200 butterfly to claim the silver, as junior Jake Bailey grabbed the bronze with a time of 1:56.57. Quigg placed second in the 50 freestyle, swimming a personal-best time of 20.38, before picking up the gold in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 45.05.

Senior Eric Eastham touched the wall second in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:53.13, while Kiefer earned second in the 500 freestyle with his own season-best time of 4:45.60. Montori picked up the gold in the 100 butterfly after swimming a time of 50.64. The 200 individual medley saw senior Sam Haddad finish second with a time of 1:54.78, marking a season-best.

During the relay events, the team of junior Beau Bengston, senior Freddie Borg, junior Grant Beebe and Montori swam a combined time of 1:33.82 in the 200 medley relay to take second place. In the 400 medley relay, Montori, freshman Alonso Montori, Eastham and Quigg recorded a time of 3:05.27 to finish the event first.

On The Boards
In addition to Bell’s outstanding performances for the Minutemen, graduate student Tommy Cotner finished second in the one-meter with a score of 273.45. Cotner placed third in the three-meter dive with a total of 239.93.

For the Minutewomen, sophomore Salem Howes placed fifth in the three-meter dive with a score of 227.78, while taking third in the one-meter with a six-dive total of 246.15.

UMass will take a break next week, before jumping back into the pool for the Terrier Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts. The event will take place on Friday, November 17, through Sunday, November 19, with events beginning at 10 a.m.

Just for the record, UMass women’s swim actually beat BU women’s swim….but only had one woman diver competing
