The 500 freestyle was a battle between Stanton, runner-up Colin Jacobs, and 3rd place finisher Trent Allen. The three of them entered finals separated by just under three seconds, but touched in finals with just over a second and a half between them.
Stanton (49.14) got out of the gates the slowest of the three, with Allen (48.69) and Jacobs (48.92) turning in 1st and 2nd, respectively.
By the 200 mark, Jacobs led in 1:41.13, with Allen (1:41.14) and Stanton (1:41.22) following closely behind. Stanton took over the lead at the 300 in 2:33.59 at the turn.
Allen surged to the front at the 400, clocking 3:26.14 to the feet, ahead of both Jacobs (3:26.29) and Stanton (3:26.51).
But it was the final 100 that proved to be the deciding factor for Stanton; out-splitting both Jacobs (51.22) and Allen (52.85) with his 50.88 to reach the final wall first in 4:17.39, the fastest of his career, dropping from his previous best from this meet last year in 4:17.51.
Stanton did not have much time to celebrate, with just five heats of 200 IMs in between this battle for the 500 free crown and the final of his 200 IM.

Stanton showed no signs of slowing down for the 200 IM, charging to his 2nd win of the evening, and 2nd lifetime best of the hour.
It was, however, a hard-fought win for Stanton. Stanton opened up the 200 IM in 5th after the fly leg (23.30), but rapidly moved up to 2nd by the halfway point following his 25.52 backstroke split.
Stanton continued to build with the breaststroke (29.72), earning him the lead with 50 yards to go. He closed in the fastest split of the field (24.41), touching the wall first in 1:42.85.
That final time moves him up to 15th all-time in the 17-18 rankings, and betters his lifetime best from December of 2023 by over a second (1:44.04).

Big time.
Hats off. That’s one heck of a double.
My thoughts exactly. I was watching and thoroughly impressed.
