Australian swim coach Brian King falsified portions of resume, per Daily Telegraph

Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports that well-known swim coach Brian King fabricated large portions of his coaching resume.

King previously coached with the Miami Swimming Club, but was fired from that job. He has reportedly been coaching disgraced Chinese Olympian Sun Yang in Australia though – Swimming Australia officially cut ties with Sun after details emerged about his failed doping test, forcing Sun to leave his former coach Denis Cotterell. Cotterell coached with King at Miami.

Among the alleged falsities on King’s resume, according to the Telegraph:

  • King claimed to be an assistant to the Australian Junior Olympic Team in 1998, but the team never existed.
  • King claimed to have won the Queen of England Award for swimming, but the award doesn’t exist.
  • King claimed to have coached the NSWIS Sport Paralympic Team, which the Telegraph reports is untrue.
  • He also listed himself as holding a degree in Sports Science and a Masters in Biomechanics from the University of Adelaide, which the Telegraph reports is also untrue.

You can read the full Telegraph piece here. SwimSwam reached out to King for comment, but he only referred us to his lawyers, who did not respond to our e-mail.

The Telegraph also reports that King is under investigation for allegedly abusing a number of his swimmers. SwimSwam is continuing to gather information on that story and will publish an update when more can be confirmed.

Article: http://concussioninc.net/?p=10035

“Brian King coached one year at Penn State, 2009-10, under head swimming coach John Hargis. Multiple informed sources tell Concussion Inc. that Hargis quietly let King go after he had a sexual relationship with a Nittany Lions swimmer. Hargis himself left Happy Valley in 2013 for Auburn University, where he is the associate head coach.”

Hi Billy

Brian King is the current coach of Chinese swimmer Sun Yang. Sun Yang was banned for taking a banned substance and was removed from all Australian podium pools. He is also currently being investigated for his relationship with a questionable doctor.

Brian king is an “alleged” fraud – he has got to this position because of a relationship with Dennis Cotterell.

Complaints about Brian King were brought to the attention of Swimming Australia several years ago but because of Denis Cotterell these complaints where simply ignored or deemed too hard to investigate.

Because of more recent events he is now being investigated by Swimming Australia – hopefully they will do an internal investigation as to why this… Read more »

I know this was posted a year ago but I’ve just found it… my son was also treated the same way at Kingston pool by Brian King. He won’t swim any more and he’s reluctant to trust other sports coaches! Total waste of space!

I’ve never even heard Brian King’s name before. Is this a big deal?

It matters and is a big deal because verbal abuse of any child is unconscienable. He routinely called one of our swimmers a “f****t” every day. He has what’s coming to him.

I don’t even know what to say. I’m trying to wait for everything to come out before I rush to judgement, but if even half of the stuff that’s come up about Brian King lately is true, the guy is scum.

Take a look at the comments from many disgruntled people in this Swimswam article in January this year: http://swimswam.com/sun-yang-still-training-australia-despite-severed-ties-former-coach/. And then read the comments in this article http://swimswam.com/cotterell-feels-australian-swimmers-need-tougher/ Brian King has allegedly left a path of destruction both here and overseas.

About Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson swam for nearly twenty years. Then, Jared Anderson stopped swimming and started writing about swimming. He's not sick of swimming yet. Swimming might be sick of him, though. Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
