Australia Out of World Championship Final in Mixed 4×100 Freestyle Relay

2025 World Championships

In a surprise upset, Australia is out of the final of the mixed 4×100 freestyle relay after touching 11th overall with a 3:25.15 in prelims.

Australia’s relay team was 6th in their heat, with their time being .21 off of 8th-place (Canada – 3:24.94).

Opting for a MMFF order, Kai Taylor led off the race in 48.37, followed by Max Giuliani with a 49.00. Hannah Casey swam the 3rd leg, splitting a 54.23, and Milla Jansen anchored in 53.55.

All four swimmers raced on their respective 4×100 freestyle relays on day 1. During the prelims of the women’s 4×100, Casey split 53.86 while Jansen split 53.10. Jansen was also on the finals’ relay, where she split 52.89. On the men’s 4×100, Taylor Split 47.55 and Giuliani split 48.08; they went on to split 47.04 and 47.63, respectively, in the final.

Australia’s result this morning comes as a surprise, as they  hold both the World Record and Championship Record in this event. Australia was the 2023 world champion in this event, where they set both records in 3:18.83.

Earlier this week, Australia showed off the country’s dominance in the relay events as they won the women’s 4×100 free relay, men’s 4×100 free relay and women’s 4×200 free relay. The nation also took 3rd in the men’s 4×200 free relay and 5th in the mixed 4×100 medley relay.

It seems with the retirement of some of their best swimmers and with Ariane Titmus on swimming sabbatical, they are short of strong solid swimmers for this World Aquatics Championship in Singapore

They’re still winning most medals and most golds behind USA

The conversation below is mainly focussed on the athletes this is shifting blame for this disaster from where it should lie – on the coaching staff.
Unless some of the athletes were affected by the gastro that is reeking havoc across multiple nations there are questions to be answered by the coaches.
Max G should never have swum this morning – it was obvious last night at end of the 4×2 that he was completely spent. After he got out of the pool his team mates had to support him. He has done a superb job in both freestyle relays, but he should have been rested this morning. Kyle C has only the medley relay to go in… Read more »

The global competition has increased so much that even the strong countries with the most depth USA, AUS, and CHN just can’t send sub par swimmers in the relay prelims and expect to qualify for final.

Australian swimmers would be back in their bubble wraps in sunny Queensland after this meet and not to be seen competing again until Glasgow 2026 because it’s just too much effort otherwise

I would have had Southam and Taylor. This would have been enough to see us through. They were also pretty even in the men’s 4×100 so another chance to test form, take the fastest through to join Chalmers in the final.

Dare I say it…maybe too many relays? Or we do not have enough swimmers to fulfill all the requirements of the combined individual + relays.

If they got rid of individual semis it might be easier.

None of the swimmers in the heats swam any semis.

Amazing she’s still swimming so fast.
She truly has great natural talent. A shame she didn’t have Bohl as the coach.

The Australian coaches should be sacked for puting that line up into the heats. Australia won both mens and womens 4×100 relay. There is zero excuses for not making the final.

Often times countries will assign 1 relay to each of the coaching staff, to oversee its preparation, and make proposals for who should swim in it and what order to the head coach. Does anyone know if that happened here and if they gave it to Mel?
