Atkinson, Jones scratch 100 free B finals at Pan Ams day 1 finals

A couple of swimmers have scratched the B final of the 100 free on opening night of swimming at the Pan American Games, most notably Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson and the USA’s Cullen Jones.

Atkinson was the 11th qualifier this morning and would have been seeded 3rd in the consolation final. But Atkinson is much more of a threat in the breaststroke races, and is probably taking the night to rest up for those events later on. The 200 breast is tomorrow morning.

Jamaica will also have a 4×100 free relay swimming tonight, with Atkinson likely their centerpiece.

12th seed Arlene Semeco of Venezuela also scratched from the 100 free B final, allowing Bolivia’s Karen Torrez and the Bahamas’ Ariel Weech into the consol heat in Toronto tonight.

Semeco will likely be a part of Venezuela’s 4×100 free relay tonight, which is seeded 5th heading into finals.

Jones, meanwhile, was the 11th qualifier as well. He’ll drop the men’s race along with 15th seed Jordy Groters of Aruba. That allows Nicaragua’s Miguel Mena and Jamaica’s Timothy Wynter into the consol heat.

The other major scratch of the day came in prelims, where Canada’s Noemie Thomas did not compete in her scheduled heat of the 200 fly. Thomas was the 5th overall seed coming into the meet.
