IRVING, Texas – Sun Devil Swim and Dive earned more weekly honors after their performance at the Stanford/California tri-meet last weekend, as announced by the Big 12 Conference on Thursday morning.
Graduate Student Adam Chaney was named the Men’s Swimmer of the Week by the Big 12 Conference, and sophomore Julia Ullmann earned Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Graduate Student Remi Fabiani won the Men’s Newcomer of the Week.
Chaney earns his second Big 12 men’s swimmer of the Week honor after winning it following a superior performance in the tri-meet between Stanford and California. He placed first in both the 50 free (18.98) and 100 back (44.49). He also helped the Sun Devils in winning both the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Two weeks ago, he won newcomer of the week after his performance in the All-Arizona showdown.
Ullmann wins her fourth career Big 12 weekly award after her strong performances in the 200 fly (1:56.64), a new career best in the 200 fly for the sophomore. In the relays, the Swiss native helped the Sun Devils in their performance in the 200 medley (1:37.44). For the butterfly specialist, it’s her first honor this season.
Fabiani earned the Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week following his first-place performances in the 100 free (41.68) and 200 free (1:32.56) as well as a strong performance in the 50 free. He helped the Maroon and Gold win the 200 free relay (1:15.52), the 400 free relay (2:47.07), and the 800 free relay (6:13.37). It’s his second Big 12 weekly honor nod of the season.
The Sun Devils will be back in Tempe at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center to take on UCLA in a women’s only dual at 3 p.m. MST on Friday, Nov. 7, and then take on USC to a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. MST. Arizona State’s Adam Chaney (men’s swimmer), Utah’s Attila Bernatsky (men’s diver), and Arizona State’s Remi Fabiani (men’s newcomer) were named the recipients of the Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving weekly awards. On the women’s side, Arizona State’s Julia Ullmann (women’s swimmer) and Iowa State’s pair of Kate Mitchell (women’s diver) and Carlotta Gazzola (women’s newcomer) rounded out the weekly honors for competition ending October 26.
Chaney helped lead the No. 3 Sun Devils to a tri-meet win over No. 4 California and No. 8 Stanford, contributing two individual victories in the 50 freestyle (18.98) and 100 backstroke (44.49). He was the only swimmer to break 19 seconds in the 50 free and won the 100 back by more than 1.5 seconds. Chaney also posted the fastest 50 split (18.06) in the 200 free relay and contributed a 41.77 leg in the 400 free relay, helping ASU secure first place. It is the graduate’s second weekly award this season.
Bernatsky opened his season with two top-two finishes against Wyoming. The sophomore earned his first career gold medal in the 3-meter dive with a score of 281.25 in the Utes’ men’s team’s 196-104 season-opening win. He added a runner-up finish on the 1-meter dive with a score of 256.60. Bernatsky competed in 12 of Utah’s 13 meets as a freshman during the 2024-25 season. The award is the first of his collegiate career.
In his third meet as a Sun Devil, Fabiani collected two individual wins, two relay gold medals and a runner-up individual finish. After winning the 100 free (41.68) and 200 free (1:32.56), he finished second in the 50 free (19.05) to round out his individual events. He also contributed to three winning relays, including an 18.74 split in the 200 free relay and a 41.46 starting leg in the 400 free relay. It is his second Conference accolade this season.
Against competition from No. 3 Stanford and No. 5 California, Ullmann accumulated three medals for the Sun Devils. Ullman highlighted her meet with a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:56.64), a third-place finish in the 200 free relay (22.59 split) and a silver medal in the 200 medley relay (23.29 butterfly leg split). It is her first accolade of the season after being named Big 12 Women’s Newcomer of the Week three times during the 2024-25 season.
Mitchell picked up three event wins for Iowa State last week, sweeping the diving events at South Dakota and helping the Cyclones to two road wins. She finished first in the 3-meter dive in both meets (295.50 at SDSU, 281.70 at USD) as well as the 1-meter dive (274.80) against South Dakota. In the 1-meter dive against South Dakota State, she placed second (277.50). It is the senior’s first Conference weekly award of her career.
Gazzola won all four of her individual events over the weekend, helping Iowa State to two road victories. The freshman broke the pool record by over 3.5 seconds in the 1650 freestyle at South Dakota State (17:24.79), and posted wins in the 500 free (5:08.32 at SDSU, 5:08.30 at USD) and 1000 free (10:27.29 at USD). The freshman from Milan, Italy, is the first Cyclone to be named Big 12 Women’s Newcomer of the Week this season.
