Army Women, Penn State Men Split Dual in West Point

Penn State traveled to Crandall Pool to take on Army for a two-day dual on Friday and Saturday, with the Nittany Lion men coming out on top over the Black Knights, 169-130, while the Army women prevailed, 170-125.

Women’s Recap

One of the highlights of the day for Army came in the women’s 200 freestyle, where senior Molly Webber lowered her own program record, clocking the first sub 1:46 performance in team history at 1:45.98. She set the previous record the weekend prior in a dual against Boston University in 1:46.26. She later captured the 500 free win in 4:48.25.

Senior Catorina Gilmore earned the next individual win for the Army women, clocking 1:00.95 in the 100 breaststroke. She later completed the sweep, winning the 200 breast in 2:13.42.

Sophomore Sydney Brager and sophomore Angie McKane each nabbed butterfly wins for Army; Brager notched the earlier 200 fly win in 2:00.08, while McKane later won the 100 fly in a comfortable 52.62.

McKane also added to the Army win total in the 50 free, clocking 22.81.

Army senior Layne Peterson clocked the lone sub-2:00 200 backstroke in 1:58.79, with sophomore Jenna Hart placing 2nd in 2:00.88.

Army opened and closed with relay wins to kick off and seal their victory. Their 200 medley relay team of Angie McKane (25.16), Catriona Gilmore (28.11) Sydney Braeger (23.72), and Molly Webber (22.70) stopped the clock in 1:39.69. Their 400 free relay squad of McKane (50.45), Webber (49.69), Kira Macmullan (51.43), and Grace Wagner (50.32) stamped the win in 3:21.89.

Penn State still earned a number of event wins on the road. Junior Kailey Koval swept the diving events, scoring 285.23 on 1-meter and 314.55 on 3-meter to open up the Nittany Lions scoring.

Senior Morgan Moore earned the first Penn State win in the pool, touching in 9:50.71 in the 1000 free.

Fifth-year Margaret Markvardt denied Army the backstroke sweep, winning the 100 back in 53.81, over two seconds ahead of Army’s Layne Peterson (55.89).

Penn State earned valuable points in the 100 free, finishing 1-2 with senior Catherine Meisner (50.04) and sophomore Katie Ketter (50.48).

Sophomore Julia Barto earned the final win for the Penn State women in the 200 IM, turning in a time of 2:01.96.

Men’s Recap

Penn State’s men’s squad earned 10 event wins en route to a road victory over Army.

Senior Eduardo Cisternas was one of three multi-individual event winners for the Nittany Lions, earning the distance sweep with victories in both the 500 free (4:20.94) and 1000 free (9:08.48).

Senior Mariano Lazzerini doubled up the breaststroke wins for Penn State, claiming both the 100 breast in a season best 51.52 and 200 breast (1:53.94). His 100 breast now makes him the 3rd fastest performer in Division 1 this season.

Junior Tylor Kim rounded out the trio of multi-event winners, picking up the win in the 50 free in 20.09 and the 100 free in 43.31.

Senior Matthew Bittner and freshman Vincente Villanueva each added to the win column for the Nittany Lion men; Bittner won the 100 fly in 48.33, while Villanueva took the 200 IM in 1:48.33.

Similar to the Army women, Penn State’s men bookended their win with wins in both relays; Matthew Bittner (21.39), Lazzerini (23.39), Cooper Morley (20.23), and Kim (19.36) combined for 1:24.37 200 medley relay victory.  Later the team of Rylan Anselm (43.79), Lazerini (43.39), Bittner 43.46), and Kim (42.54) turned in the fastest 400 free relay in 2:53.18.

Alexander Reese also added points on the board for the Nittany Lions, scoring 299.70 for the win on 1-meter.

Army was led by sophomore Johnny Crush’s two individual wins, logging a season best and NCAA qualifying 45.41 to win the 100 back, before completing the backstroke double with his performance of 1:44.23 in the 200 back.

Junior Thomas Hadji added another event win for the Black Knights, touching first in the 200 free in 1:35.96, marking his fastest time this season.

Sophomore Daniel Verdolaga also picked up the fourth and final event win in the pool for Army in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:48.84.

Sophomore Jack McDaniel added a win on the boards for Army, scoring 320.03 on 3-meter.
