Texas has named five men as captains for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. The Longhorn men captured the 2025 NCAA Championship title this past March.

Captains:

Maurer was the 2nd highest individual scorer this past season at the NCAA Championships with 57 points as he swam to NCAA titles in the 400 IM and 500 free. He also was 2nd in the 1650 free. Only Hubert Kos scored more NCAA points with 60, winning the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM at NCAAs. Maurer enters his junior season this fall and transferred into the program last fall after spending a year at Stanford.

Modglin, a rising junior, scored 23 individual points at 2025 NCAAs. He made the ‘A’ final of the 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM but notably was disqualified in the final of the 200 IM. Modglin also helped the team’s relays including the 200 medley relay that swam to an NCAA title.

Nelson arrives as a transfer for his senior season at Texas after spending the last three seasons at Texas A&M. This past season, Nelson was highlighted by a 7th place finish at NCAAs in the 400 IM. He also finaled in the 200 IM finishing 14th.

Branon enters his senior season with the Longhorns and swam in prelims of NCAAs this past season. He was 24th in the 200 fly and 44th in the 100 fly.

Harris is the lone diver to be named a captain for the men’s team. He enters his senior season and competed at NCAAs this past year. He finished 10th in the 1 meter and was 21st in the 3 meter event to score seven points, the 2nd highest among divers.

The Texas men will look to defend their NCAA title this upcoming season under head coach Bob Bowman, who arrived last offseason from Arizona State. The team has not yet posted its meet schedule online but will host the Texas Hall of Fame Invite for midseason in November.

Kos is one foot out the door to being pro, he will do the WC circuit in the fall and everything. I get why they didn’t choose him. Johnston idk.

I don’t even think Hubert is in school right now based on instagram posts

Really respect making Baylor a captain. He was a true leader at TAM and no reason that will not translate

I wonder how the captains are picked. When I swam, our coach let the team vote. But I know many coaches make the call.

Whoever it was, I’m sure a lot of thought went into it and they chose the people they felt were best suited to be captains.

It’s a bit unusual that a 5th or 6th year, whatever ever Johnston is, wasn’t selected and a 1st year transfer was selected, but maybe that tells you a little more how the team feels about them.

Voted by the team or appointed by Bowman?

If it was Bowman’s choice, Kos would have been chosen

Choosing a junior and a recent transfer over David Johnston is odd.

Doesn’t account for the fact that Johnston himself might not have wanted the role.

Baylor Nelson being a team captain is interesting

I agree. Maybe his work ethic has already earned the respect of his coaches and peers. But it’s weird to have a captain who doesn’t even know his way around the campus.

I’m not sure how they do it but funny to see someone who’s been on campus maybe 4 months get a team captain position over David Johnston who has been at Texas (minus Olympic year) since fall 2020
