Newport Sweeps Titles At Oregon 1-4A State Championships

There was a familiar team atop the podium at the Oregon School Activities Association 4A/3A/2A/1A State Swimming Championships.

Newport swept the team titles, with the girls’ squad winning its second title in three years and the boys winning their fifth title since 2018, overtaking runner-up Cascade Christian in the last event.

Girls’ Recap

Newport was led by sophomore Ilona Weisz, who won two events and was a part of a winning relay team.

Weisz put up a 25.40 anchor split to help Newport win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:56.38. Other team members were Ruby Perucci (30.56), Gwynn Postlewait (31.53) and Hana Parker (28.89).

Weisz then won the 200 free in a time of 1:52.54, beating out defending champion Becca Koza of Cove by 39 -one-hundredths.

Weisz later claimed the 500 free in a time of 5:06.10.

The other multi-event winner was St. Mary’s freshman Bri Chamberland, who won the 50 free in 24.39 and the 100 breast in 1:05.39, both personal bests.

Koza was seeking to become the fourth girl in state history to win eight individual titles, but was denied that in the 200 free. However, Koza, an Idaho commit, finished her career off with seven after claiming the 100 free in a time of 51.90.

Other event winners were:

  • Marist sophomore Fina Miret won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 2:13.44.
  • Riverdale junior Sam Borus captured the 100 fly in a time of 58.18.
  • In the 200 free relay, Catlin Gabel’s team of Chloe Moreau (25.95), Chloe Zhang (26.68), Xinyu Luo (27.54) and Addison Dauler (24.94) won in a time of 1:45.11.
  • Aanya Chakravarthy, a sophomore at Valley Catholic, won the 100 back in a personal best time of 58.00 to improve on a runner-up finish one year ago.
  • In the 400 free relay, Cottage Grove won in 3:55.99 behind the team of Hailey Ferguson (59.91), Samara Lidstrom (59.76), Tirzah Poetzl (1:01.94) and Avery Bengston (54.38).

Boys’ Recap

It came down to the last event, with Newport’s team of Clyde Bretz (50.41), Hudson Cline (52.48), Samuel Smith (55.38) and Jahan Eibner (47.81) winning the 400 free relay in a time of 3:26.08 to overtake Cascade Christian in the team standings.

Cascade Christian didn’t have a team in the event.

Cascade Christian did win the 200 medley relay behind the squad of Isaac Janbay (27.18), Blake Daniel (29.60), Michael Ragan (27.22) and Myles Anderson (20.77) in 1:44.77.

Anderson was one of the three multi-event winners on the day.

The junior for Cascade Christian swept the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 free (21.05) and the 100 free (46.73) in personal best times.

St. Mary’s junior Alexandru Titianu won the 100 fly in 52.52 and the 100 back in 55.74. The other multi-event winner was Phoenix junior Quin Davis, who claimed the 200 free in 1:48.81 and the 500 free in 5:04.05.

Other event winners were:

  • Eibner, a junior for Newport, won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:58.16 after placing 2nd last year.
  • Molalla’s team of Caleb Hauth (24.05), Zack Pentz (24.34), Derick Kodak (23.80) and Liam McArthur (22.41) won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:34.60.
  • Philomath junior Lucas Brandt won the 100 breast in a time of 1:00.16.
