Sam Short of Australia continued his record-breaking meet as he swam to a 14:52.33 in the 1500 free to earn the win. Short broke the previous Pro Series Record of a 14:52.56 set back in 2008 by Peter Vanderkaay.

Just last night, Short broke his own Pro Series Record in the men’s 800 free as he swam to a 7:40.98 in the 800 free. That broke his own PSS record.

Short has been as fast as 14:37.28, a time which he swam to win bronze at the 2023 World Championships. See how his splits from tonight compared to his best time.

Short was under 1:00 on all of his 100 splits during his lifetime best swim but was above that mark three times tonight.

With his time tonight, Short now takes over the top time in the world so far this season. It was his first time swimming the event since he was 4th in the event with a 14:43.08 at the 2025 World Championships.

You don’t see Peter Vanderkaays name these days. Good to see an old record gone.

Two possibilities here:

He is at least partly rested for this meet. His times are basically the same as his from the AUS trials last year, for which he had some rest.

He is in hard training and is going to break the 1500 WR and may even break the 800 free WR this year. I think this is less likely than the above.

Has he said anything in these post-race interviews about whether he is rested? If not, Swimswam, can you ask if you get the chance to interview him?

I’d be pretty surprised if he was completely unrested, even just given the travel etc.

I have two points:

1. No one is ever rested.
2. The 800 free WR is safe.
