The LSU Tigers set three School Records at the Auburn Last Chance Meet this weekend among six athletes sent to the competition to chase NCAA Championship qualifying times.
Breaststrokers Volodymyr Lisovets and Guilherme Camossato each broke a school record on Friday night. Lisovets did so in the 100 breast with a time of 51.13, taking down former Tiger Mitch Mason’s record time of 51.55.
That swim by Lisovets jumps to 12th in the nation this season, which should lock up the first NCAA Championship invite for the 6’7″ sophomore from Ukraine.
Auburn’s Uros Zivanovic, a Serbian sophomore, knocked four tenths off his lifetime best and six-tenths off his season best in finals of that 100 breaststroke to touch in 51.10. That will lock up his NCAA Invite too.
Camossato clocked a time of 1:52.73 in the men’s 200 breast to break his own school record, which was set earlier this season at the SEC Championships.
Camossato ranks 30th in the NCAA with his time, which is unlikely to earn an NCAA Invite. It would have been squarely on the bubble in most years, but with automatic qualifiers, it is probably on the wrong side of the bubble (though there’s still a chance).
On Saturday, Grace Palmer broke the women’s 200 breaststroke record with a 2:07.55, breaking Niamh Robinson‘s record of 2:08.37 from 2020. She swam 2:09.07 to finish 4th at the SEC Championships, but that second-and-a-half improvement on Saturday moves her to 16th in the NCAA this season and locks up an NCAA Championship Invite.
Other Results Relevant to NCAA Qualifying
- Auburn time trialed a 200 free relay for the apparent purpose of getting Kalle Makinen extra shots at a 50 free qualifying time. He swam 19.11 in prelims and 19.10 in finals of that relay; he also swma the 100 free in prelims (and was slow), but rather than going for an opening split in the 100 free in finals, he time trialed the 50 free and swam 19.13. His previous season best of 19.09 ranks him 40th nationally this season.
- He came back on Saturday and swam 45.22 in the 100 back prelims, a drop of .12 seconds on his season best. While that jumped him about five spots, it still leaves him ranked 32nd. While there are a bunch of guys ahead of him who might not choose this event for March, he’s still in an unlikely, but not impossible, qualifying position.
- NC State’s Olivia Nel dropped a lifetime best of 47.36 in the 100 free final on Saturday. That also knocked about half-a-second off her season best, which jumped her to 20th in the country this season and likely puts her into a third straight NCAA Championship meet as an individual qualifier. The Wolf Pack will have at least two qualifiers in the 100 free, with Cassie Moses on the edge of an invite ranking 36th in the NCAA.
- Auburn freshman Luke Bedsole dropped half-a-second off his previous best in the 200 fly, from SECs, to touch in 1:41.33. That climbs him to 28th in the NCAA this season and squarely on the bubble once Automatic Qualifiers are factored in.
- Auburn’s Maston Ballew dropped a 1:52.72 in prelims and a 1:52.10 in finals in the the 200 breaststroke, which climbs him to 19th in the NCAA. While that’s not a stone-cold lock with a few Last Chance meets left, that should put him into his first NCAA Championship meet.
- The Auburn women took advantage of the chance to race in a home pool to time trial a 200 free relay. They finished in 1:28.25, which is .01 seconds under the NCAA “A” standard. While it’s a bit moot because they already easily cleared the standard at SECs with a 1:27.81, the Tigers were hyper aggressive on starts and registered -.07 reaction times on each of their last two legs – though no DQ was called.

I might go back and see exactly how many Last Chance Meet 50 frees Makinen has done in his career. This is an every year tradition for him!
Put me in the camp of eliminating the last chance meets. Getting 4-5 extra tries at a meet like this seems ridiculous. Also – no TT at last chance meets please. Rant over.
