For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Winter Juniors ‘A’ finalist Lucas Huckabay has announced his verbal commitment to compete for the University of Arizona beginning in the fall of 2026. He confirmed the commitment on SwimCloud, writing:
I’m beyond thankful and excited to announce my commitment to further my athletic and academic career at the University of Arizona! Above all i would like to thank the Lord for his sovereign guidance in this decision and in my life. I would like to thank my parents, family, friends and coaches that have help me in my journey. Special thanks to Coach Morgan, Coach Mark and Coach Adam to shaping me into the athlete i am today. Finally i would like to thank Coach Ben and Coach Peter, along with the whole U of A coaching staff for this incredible opportunity! Bear Down!
A senior at Kingsburg High School in Kingsburg, California, Huckabay has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team all four years. In addition to competing for the Vikings, he trains year-round with Clovis Swim Club, where he excels at sprint freestyle and breaststroke.
Huckabay has steadily improved year to year, but took things to another level in 2025. He dropped from 21.05 to 20.53 in the 50 free, 46.30 to 44.89 in the 100 free, and 55.42 to 54.10 in the 100 breast, the kind of across-the-board progression that put him squarely in the Power Four recruiting conversation.
Huckabay is a two-time Winter Juniors qualifier, having competed at the meet both in 2024 and 2025. This past December, he made the ‘A’ final of the 100 breast, finishing seventh in a time of 54.15 after clocking his current PB in prelims. He also finished 101st in the 100 free (46.10) and 117th in the 50 free (21.15), which were new season bests. It was his first time earning a swim in a final, let alone an ‘A’ final at the meet, after finishing 30th in the 100 breast (55.43) and 121st in the 50 free (21.54) a year prior.
On the high school scene, Huckabay had a strong showing at Sectionals last May, winning the 100 breast with a then-PB of 54.53, taking bronze in the 100 free while setting his current best time, and helping both the 200 and 400 free relays to fifth-place finishes while setting his 50 free lifetime best in the process.
He carried that momentum into the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championships, finishing fifth in the 100 breast (54.72) and 10th in the 100 free (44.93), his second straight year placing fifth in the breast after clocking 55.42 at the 2024 State meet, where he also took 23rd in the 50 free (21.19). After going scoreless at State as a sophomore, Huckabay has developed into the team’s top scorer, tallying 16 of Kingsburg’s 20 points in 2024 and all 26 in 2025 as the Vikings climbed from 53rd to 33rd as a team.

A Division I program, Arizona competes in the Big 12 Conference, with the Wildcats taking the runner-up spot behind ASU at the 2026 conference championships. To earn a second swim at the 2026 Big 12 Conference Championships, it took times of 54.86 in the 100 breast and 20.13/44.47 in the 50/100 free, putting Huckabay in scoring range in the 100 breast. His best time would have ranked 17th out of prelims and into the ‘C’ final, just outside the 54.01 needed to advance to the ‘B’ heat.
On the team’s 2026-27 depth chart, when factoring in graduations and incoming recruits, Huckabay is projected to rank third in the 100 breast, 10th in the 50 free, and 13th in the 100 free.
Huckabay will arrive in Tucson as part of a sprint-heavy incoming class that includes sprint freestylers Will Harrison (20.18/44.69), Nazar Zoukovski (20.28/44.62), and Cole Faut (20.13/44.58), distance freestyler Grant Pier, backstroke and IM specialist Vito Sgroi, and fellow sprint breaststroker Lucas Morin (1:02.1 LCM).
