Day 3 Finals Heat Sheet
For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids,” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Ups” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mids” to B finalists, and “Downs” to C finalists.
Scores After Day 2
- Princeton – 532
- Harvard – 446.5
- Brown – 399.5
- Penn – 353
- Yale – 318
- Cornell – 245
- Columbia – 202
- Dartmouth – 194
Penn came out blazing on Friday morning, placing 22 swimmers in scoring position, 9 of them in ‘A’ finals. This was always expected to be the Quakers’ biggest scoring day and they did not disappoint. Penn made ‘A’ finals in the 100 fly and 100 back, and 1 each in the 400 IM, 200 free, and 100 breast.
Princeton led the morning with 12 ‘A’ finalists, including 4 in the 400 IM, 3 in the 100 fly, 3 in the 100 back, 1 in the 200 free, and 1 in the 100 breast (the only Tiger entrant). Princeton outperformed their psych sheet seedings by 30.5 points.
Brown, with 16 overall finalists, 7 of them in ‘A’ finals, could overtake Harvard in the standings tonight. The Bears had a notably strong performance in the 200 free, where they will occupy half of the lanes in the ‘A’ final. This was surprising to absolutely no one after their 800 free relay title.
Columbia outperformed the psych sheet seedings by 30 points, earning 1 ‘A’, 3 ‘B’, and 5 ‘C’ final spots. Yale was up 19.5 points and Dartmouth overperformed by 12.
