THURSDAY PRELIMS HEAT SHEETS
TexasΒ Campbell Stoll dropped the women’s 400 IM as the most significant decision among top 10 scratches for Thursday’s prelims session at the SEC Championships.
The junior Stoll was the #2 seed in the event behind only Tennessee’sΒ Ella Jansen and finished 3rd at last year’s meet. Stoll won the 200 fly on Wednesday evening for her first career SEC title. She won the 400 IM as a freshman in the Big 12.
Stoll will instead swim the 100 fly, where she is also the #2 seed (50.98) behind her teammate Eva Okaro (50.82), though Tennessee’sΒ Mizuki Hirai, a huge mid-season addition, is lurking as the #5 seed (51.49).
In spite of Okaro’s presence as the top seed, the Longhorns are much better overall in the 400 IM than the 100 fly. After scratches (Angie Coe chose the 400 IM over the 100 fly), they are the Longhorns’ only two swimmers seeded to score, but Texas has four in the points in the 400 IM, so on a team scoring perspective, this is probably aΒ very slightly positive choice (and derisks the scoring decision a bit).
Jansen, meanwhile, chose that 400 IM (#1 seed) over the 200 free (#5 seed). After Stoll’s scratch, Jansen is the top seed in the 400 IM by three seconds.
On the men’s side, Texas transferΒ Baylor Nelson made his big choice and dropped the 200 free (#9 seed) for the 400 IM (#1 seed).
While the two races both moved significantly in the new NCAA Championship schedule, they still fall on the same day and are back-to-back swimming races (separated by three rounds of diving), so he’ll still have to make the choice come March.
Other Top 10 Scratches
- Georgia’sΒ Ieva Maluka scratched the 200 free as the #10 seed and will instead race the 400 IM, where she is now up to the #3 seed. She swims both races internationally, and the 200 free is what put her on the World Championship team, but the 400 IM is probably her better race in yards.
- After finishing 2nd in the 200 fly on Wednesday, Tennessee’sΒ Emily BrownΒ scratched the 100 fly on Thursday. She will instead swim the 400 IM as the #2 seed.
- Texas A&M freshmanΒ Chase Swearingen has dropped the men’s 100 fly as the #4 seed. One of the bright spots in what has been a challenging year for the Aggies, he only had three entries in the meet, and this was easily his best of those. He has remaining slots in the 50 and 100 free. He didn’t swim on A&M’s 200 medle relay on Tuesday.

Leva is a girl.
Anyone know what’s up with Grace Rabb?
believe she’s injured..?
Braden, there’s a rumor David Johnston is transferring to a Big 10 school? That might be the worst news I’ve heard in a while
How would that even be allowed bro? Heβs already had one redshirt and a 5th year π
I don’t get it at all. For that reason + the fact that in the last 10 years if there’s someone I would have thought is a Longhorn through and through, it’s David
Also it looks like Kos is out of the 100 FL
So it’s gonna be the 400 IM then π
Looks like my hunch was right.
Never mind, he dropped both!
So he’s gonna do the double then.
Jonny Marshall in the 200 free? Interesting
You know the Texas team better than most – ~ What do you think his prelim time will be?
Could Anthony be hunting a 1:30 relay leg for the 800 FRR at NCAAs?
Uhhh
