Filip Nowacki Carries European SC Championships Speed Into English SC Championships

2025 SWIM ENGLAND NATIONAL WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

We saw day two of the 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships unfold from Sheffield, with additional notable performances transpiring on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Newly minted European Junior Record holder in the men’s 200m breaststroke, Filip Nowacki took on his pet event and won the event in spades.

The 18-year-old out of Millfield produced an effort of 2:03.24 to beat his competitors by nearly 5 seconds en route to gold.

Bath’s Christian Ryan was next to the wall in 2:08.02 followed by Loughborough’s Finn Kemp, who bagged bronze in 2:08.14.

Nowacki set the new European Junior Record at a head-turning time of 2:02.96 at this year’s European Short Course Championships so tonight’s effort wasn’t too terribly off that performance.

16-year-old Amalie Smith made her presence known in the women’s 400m IM, topping the podium in a stellar time of 430.645.

That beat the field by a large margin, with Holly Hopwood next to the wall in 4:38.30 followed by Ines Guimond-Beethan who hit 4:40.50.

As for teenager Smith, her performance tonight checked in as the fastest of her young career, destroying her former personal best of 4:37.79 put up at last year’s edition of this competition.

She’s now Great Britain’s 7th-best performer in history and her time established a new European Junior Record. You can read more about her record here.

National record holder Imogen Clark topped the women’s 50m breaststroke podium in a time of 29.60, the fastest of the field by over a second.

The reigning national record holder held her ground against the ikes of Sienna Robinson of Loughborough and Jasmine Carter of Mount Kelly.

Additional Notes

  • Open water ace Hector Pardoe reaped gold in the men’s 1500m free, producing a time of 14:57.31 to beat the pack. That represented a monster personal best for the Olympian, destroying the 15:13.13 turned in at the 2022 Scottish SC Championships.
  • Mount Kelley’s Mantas Kauspedas topped the men’s 50m back podium in an effort of 23.00. That narrowly got to the wall ahead of Bath’s newly minted 200m back national record holder Cameron Brooker who settled for silver in 23.16. Loughborough’s Maddox Roberts collected the bronze in 23.62.
  • Evan Jones of the Manchester Performance Centre clocked the quickest time in the men’s 200m free, putting up 1:42.55 to top the podium. His result was the sole effort of the final under the 1:43-threshold with Bath’s Brooker next in line at 1:43.29. Alex Cohoon, a 2024 Olympian, rounded out the podium in 1:43.80. Jones’ time tonight represents a new lifetime best, overaking the 1:44.68 nabbed 3 years ago.
  • Manchester Performance Centre’s Blythe Kinsman delivered gold in the women’s 100m back, hitting 58.12.
  • Harriet Rogers earned gold in the women’s 50m free, posting 24.29 as the victor. Izabella Okaro snagged silver in 24.60 and Rebecca Guy bagged bronze in 24.66.

1.43 Alex Cohoon? 47s incoming next summer. Tentatively positive signs for Jacob Whittle in his first test since moving to Repton; A rarely raced event for him, but a 2s PB is a 2s PB.

Kate Schillinger (2010) set a national age group record in the 100 backstroke – 58.97

That 4:30.6 from Amalie Smith in the 4IM is a new European Junior Record(!) and would’ve been good enough for a medal at Euro SC last week. Juniors have been on fire so far.
