2025 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – West

Night three will be the longest day of competition at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships, and a handful of scratches are found in the Friday night heat sheet.

Nobody scratched their championship final swims in Austin, but California’s Cade Vieler did scratch the 200 free C final to focus on the 100 back A heat.

The move makes sense given the 17-year-old’s massive 100 back improvement curve in the meet thus far. Vieler dropped his lifetime best from 49.04 to 47.54 leading off the Livermore Aqua Cowboys’ 400 medley relay, the fastest split of the entire field. He then lowered that mark in the prelims to 47.49, coming in 6th place for finals. To take another stab at a lower place and time, he has scratched the 200 free, which he placed 18th in.

Joining him in the boy’s 200 free scratches was fellow Californian Inyoung Kim, who finished 24th place.

Kim and Winston Liang scratched their only finals swims of the night. Jacob Bougaieff and Kate McKinnon scratched one event each while keeping another event, like Vieler. Stanford-bound Bougaieff will go all-in on the 100 breast, as he missed his lifetime 54.36 by .11 this morning. He forewent his 400 IM B final spot to do so. McKinnon, meanwhile, opted out of the 100 fly and will swim the 200 free. She lowered her 200 free pr by .01 to 1:48.67 this morning, and she’ll have a clean slate to move it further tonight.
