A pair of men’s ‘A’ finalists highlight tonight’s scratches, with #3 seed Syunta Lee and #8 seed Rowan Cox scratching one swim to prioritise other events. Lee drops out of the 500 free, in which he dropped four seconds this morning, and Cox will skip the 50 free after cracking 20 seconds for the first time in the heats.
Lee also snuck into the 200 IM ‘A’ final tonight in 8th, coming in half a second off his best in 1:47.16. with just 34 minutes scheduled between the two finals tonight, he has dropped his higher seed in favor of the IM event.
He may have been intending to prioritise the 200 IM coming into the day, and swum lights out in heats of the 500 knowing it was his only swim. He was the #10 seed coming in, but dropped from 4:24.03 to 4:20.01.
Grant Kellis of Gold Medal Swim is the recipient of an ‘A’ final berth due to this, and will have an opportunity on the biggest stage to drop even more time from his huge new PB he set this morning. He knocked eight seconds off, going from 4:30.80 to 4:22.81.
Rowan Cox tied for 8th with Brody Chandler in the 50 free this morning, touching in 19.90 to shave a quarter of a second off his best and dip below 20 seconds. He qualified for the ‘A’ final in all three events contested this morning, and will focus on the 500 free and 200 IM where he is #6 seed and #2 respectively. He does have that 34-minute turnaround that we mentioned earlier between the two.
He dropped six seconds in the former, going from 4:27.68 to 4:21.03, and shaved six-tenths off in the latter to go 1:45.21. The defending 100 and 200 fly champion from a year ago, Cox looks primed to be an all-around threat after his great start to the meet.
Nathan Foucu also drops the 50 free for the 200 IM, losing his #20 seed and ‘C’ final spot to focus in the former on his ‘B’ final berth in the latter. He matched his PB of 20.18 to the hundredth in the 50 free, but shaved half a second off in the 200 IM to go 1:47.49.
Adalyn Lee scratches the 200 IM ‘C’ final to focus on the 500 free ‘A’ final where she is in lane 8, and Adalyn Biegler also skips that ‘C’ final as she aims for a medal in the 50 free after qualifying second in 22.29 this morning.
