2025 U.S. OPEN

The heat sheet for the third night of competition of the 2025 U.S. Open has released, showing us a modest number of scratches from the morning.

The bigger story from this document is not what events were scratched, but which ones weren’t. The world’s best mid distance swimmer, Summer McIntosh, tried her hand at sprints this morning, making it back in the 100 fly, 100 back, and 100 breast. The Olympic Champion scratched none of her events tonight, setting us up to witness crossover match-ups between her and various sprint stars.

McIntosh’s new teammate and fellow mid-d titan Leon Marchand swam the same triple that she did. Marchand will also scratch no events, but he didn’t qualify for the 100 back final in the first place, so we will see him in two events: the 100 fly and 100 breast.

One name absent from the heat sheet is premiere American sprinter Jack Alexy. The Cal star eliminated himself from the consolation heat of the 200 freestyle, his only event of the night.

Only one athlete from the top 8 this morning forewent their championship final spot: Ivan Puskovitch in the men’s 400 IM. The open water star will not be competing in Austin tonight, as this was his only event. His scratch bumps Bobby Finke, reigning U.S. National Champion in the event, into the A final.

Double event finalists Alex Shackell, Sienna Angove, and Tara Kinder all lightened their load by scratching one of their events each. See the full list of championship and consolation final scratches below.
