The host nation of Japan struck gold for the first time on Friday in the swimming portion of the Deaflympics, while the Ukraine men dominated on day two of the event.

Ukraine, which often excels in disability sporting events, leads the overall medals table and the swimming medals table after Thursday, where they picked up two more golds.

In the men’s 200 backstroke, Vladyslav Kremliakov picked up the win over Russian/Neutral Athlete Mark Troshin 2:06.08-2:07.75. American Matthew Klotz, the 2013 and 2017 Deaflympics champion, took bronze in 2:09.62 – his second individual medal of the meet (and fourth total medal).

In the next final, Ukraine went 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke at the hands of Oleksii Kolomiiets (2:1.811) and Denys Nakonechnyi (2:18.61).

In a male-heavy night of racing, Japan also picked up its first gold medal of the meet when Ryutaro Ibara won the 200 free in 1:54.72, beating out another Ukrainian Illia Sultanov (1:55.89).

American Collin Davis made the final of the 200 free, placing 5th in 1:57.04. That was part of a tough double for him; he also finished 8th in the 200 backstroke one event later.

The women raced the 800 free relay, where Italian standout Viola Scotto di Carlo picked up her first gold of the meet after a pair of silvers behind American Carli Cronk on Thursday. Di Carlo anchored her team’s relay in 2:02.44, overcoming a four-second deficit to the Chinese.

The win was not without controversy though – the Italians were initially disqualified, then later reinstated after appeal.

Cronk split 2:00.92 to anchor the Americans to bronze.
