Both the Mater Lakes girls team and the Bishop Kenny boys team went from being the bridesmaids to the bride, so to speak.
After both finished as the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state runner-up in Class 2A last year, each went one place better and captured state championships this past weekend in Ocala.
Girls’ Recap
Mater Lakes ended the three-year reign of Holy Names, finishing 60.6 points ahead of the defending champions this year.
Leading the way for Mater Lakes was sophomore Jianna Amores, who won the 100 back in a personal best time of 55.35 and defended her title in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 52.58 (previous best was 53.73).
Amores was also the anchor for the 400 free relay team, which won in a time of 3:32.09. Other team members were Mely Ramos, Cami Sepulveda and Jenesys Amores.
Mater Lakes also won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:37.20 behind the team of Ramos, Zoe Barreto, Jenesys Amores and Anais Gedeon.
The Holy Names team of Ella Abele, Catherine Dieffenthaller, Sonja Petrov and Parker Johnson won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:46.98.
The other two multiple-event winners were Barron Collier freshman Abi Burke and West Florida School of Tech senior Taylor Clements.
Burke won the 100 free in a personal best time of 49.02 (previous best was 50.68) and the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:46.52 (previous best was 1:48.51).
Clements won the 50 free in a personal best time of 23.03 and the 100 breast in 1:02.47.
The other individual winners were Dieffenthaller in the 200 IM (personal best 2:05.73), Seminole junior Izzy Riva in the 500 free (4:52.32) and Juliet Radich of Cardinal Gibbons in diving (527.40).

Boys’ Recap
Bishop Kenny returned to the top of the state for the fourth time in five years, avenging a runner-up finish by nine points to Mater Lakes last year.
Bishop Kenny finished 27.5 points ahead of runner-up Belen Jesuit, with Mater Lakes coming in third.
Senior and Alabama commit Carter Wright set the pace for Bishop Kenny, winning the 50 free (20.54) for the second straight year and the 100 back (48.39) for a third straight time.
Wright also swam leadoff for Bishop Kenny’s 200 medley relay team that won in a time of 1:32.05.
The 200 free relay was won by Mast Academy’s team of Josh Moreira, Jake Kotz-Agramonte, Sebastian Correa and PJ Utrera Otero in a time of 1:26.20, while Mater Lakes won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:07.99 behind the team of Nicolai Ross, Jorvir Tigrero Lopez, Robinson Naranjo and Surfiel Santiago.
Other individual winners were:
- Eastside senior Eric Gong won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:41.03 (old best was 1:42.41).
- Belen Jesuit sophomore Alec De Angulo won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:52.49 (previous best was 1:56.44).
- Michael Richey-Klein of Naples won diving with 439.90 points.
- Seminole junior Virginia commit Joey Campagnola swam a personal best time of 48.74 (49.30 was previous best) to win the 100 fly.
- Satellite senior Ohio State commit Sawyer Davis won the 100 free in a personal best time of 45.24, dipping under his previous mark of 45.69.
- Vanguard junior Parker Stever captured the 500 free in a time of 4:35.07.
- Belen senior Chris De Angulo was first in the 100 breast in a time of 56.14.
